A couple of days ago I bought a fake Eotech from a guy that I work with. I know all the comments this is likely to get, and believe me, I've given out my fair share over the fake Eotech topic. So this post isn't about my high expectations and colossal let-down over my purchase. It's more of me poking fun at myself and maybe passing on some info in the process.
I acquired the sight for about $50 - typical for what I'd expect for a comparable quality red-dot I guess. So I had no higher expectations than that. My friend had purchased one at a gun show for $100 to put on one of his friend's newly purchased AR-15's. After breaking the bank on his AR, he was willing to compromise on a "get-by" sight until his funds were replenished. So after the purchase, he was trying to take the hood off the Eotech to install the flip-up lens covers and stripped out one of the allen head screws. He called the people he purchased it from and they sent him another one, on the agreement that he'd send the stripped one back. So fast-forward a month and I go to ask how the fake Eotech is holding up on the AR. He gives me the previous backstory and says that his buddy hadn't even installed it yet. Said if I wanted to try one on my 15-22, he'd let me use the stripped one temporarily. My inner wheels began to turn at this point. So then he suggests calling the guy he purchased from and seeing if they'd sell it discounted so he didn't have to send it back. Seller agreed to $50. Possibly foolishly, I said I'd try it for that much.
So I got the screw out, which I felt confident that I could fix. And today went to try to sight it in. Today was not the best day for shooting .22 - very windy with me facing directly into the wind at my shooting area. Sighting didn't go so well. The adjustment screws have no click detents and sometimes I could turn a whole turn and not make any effect on my impact point.
Don't know if this was the sight or wind effects. Secondly, I could get into descent groupings but they would all shift low... like one to one and a half inches low every time. More testing will definately be in order once I get a calm day to go and test the zero. Heck, this thing may not even hold a zero.
Other than the extremely important issue with zeroing the sight, I'll have to say that I do like it otherwise. Reticle could stand to be brighter, but it is workable as is. Asthetics is spot-on as it looks identical to the XPS model. And honestly, my consistency with this sight was as good as it's been with a REAL Eotech on other rifles. I know there are mixed feelings about how great Eotechs are... I'm not necessarily a fan or foe. I do think they look cool for what that's worth.
If I can get it to hold zero I'll probably pick up a cheap magnifier to go with it. Anyone here have a similar setup you can comment on?
Let the mud-slinging, finger-waving, name-calling, Eotech-bashing, and told-you-so's ensue!!!!
