Finally got to go out and do some long distance shooting and I'm not real happy with my results with the 15-22.

I found that I have a hard time getting in line with my NcStar sitting on top of the flat top so a riser will be in my future for sure. At the indoor range it wasn't such a big deal, but outside, on the ground trying to shoot 220 yards, it was rough at best!

I didn't bring home any targets to show, because honestly I wasn't that impressed. My groupings at 100 yards were "human sized" far from 1" :) At 220 yards forget it, I was just trying to hit clay pigeons at that distance and it took me quite a few shots to get there... And dang I just remember I have a bullet drop compensator... I completely forgot to even try it!

Now I took my bud's Remmy VTR .308 with a 4.5Lb big honkin Millet scope (like 3 to 29 power) and I was five for five right through the center of clay pigeons @ 220 yards! Probably not even breaking a sweat with a .308! That is a fun rifle to shoot!

I had a blast! My 15-22 is now well past 1000 rounds, and I put 250 rounds through my Beretta yesterday and was keeping pretty good groups with my 92FS @ 35 yards iron sights (enough to take a human out, should I ever have to defend myself).

All in all it was a blast! Took us an hour to clean up all the spent brass :)

isn't the effective range of .22lr about 100 yards. I know they're dangerous further than that but there's a pretty big drop off, and if it's windy...

Pretty much yes.... But if you get the compensation you can hit a target. I'm not saying you will shoot any sort of groups.. I was trying to knock down clay pigeons and I did it at 220 yards, I was all the way at the bottom of the scope to do it! :)

wow. i would have considered 100yds long range for the 15-22. i only shot it once but my scope was messed up then so i didn't even hit the target. i am really surprised to hear that 220 you hit anything. gives me confidence for my next try at 100 with a working scope.

I think when I get a riser on, and do some real fine tuning on my scope at 100 yards, then use the BDC, I will be able to rock 220 with no issues.. Again, I'm not claiming I'll keep 1" groups... I won't even be trying for that... I will be shooting clay pigeons at that distance. At 100 yards I will be shooting for groupings. I have some "scope work" to do first! This scope is way too low, I had a hard time maintaining a sight picture.

Long range is definded by the man or woman pulling the trigger I've shot 22s out past 600 meters and yes they have nothing left at that range but in very low wind conditions they r a lot of fun... which puts us back at the same old problem people trying to use a gun ment to be a trainer for tactical courses as a target rifle.. granted there is no harm in play with the rifle at those ranges but don't expect it to be a target rifle because its not

Brett,

Trust me "I hear you" :) If I was truly going for accuracy it would be a bolt action.... This is all in good fun and I know I'm not gonna post up any targets that are going to make anyone say "WOW" but in the same breath, I want to make it as accurate as it can be... I've seen AR's shoot out 900 yards.. There's no reason this action can't shoot fun targets at 200 :)

My single shot Encores and Contenders are all scope sighted for 250 yards. Killed an antelope last fall at 380..piece of cake at that distance...

This thing is not an AR it's a plastic 22 rifle. 220 yards is beyond the normal effective range of the 22 LR cartridge. A 308 rifle or a real AR-15 in 223 is a completely different class of firearm. Yes you can shoot to 220 yards with a 22 and occasionally hit something with it, but you can do that with a pistol or a slingshot or any firearm if you waste enough time at it.

As to your original question, "long range" for a rifle starts at 300-500 yards depending on who you ask. This distance is beyond point blank range for any hunting cartridge, requiring the shooter to apply a ballistic solution to the shot for drop and wind, as opposed to just placing the crosshairs on the target for a short range shot.

I wasn't trying to say it in a negative way at all I chased a golf ball around with my 15-22 for at over 200 while standing.. its all in good fun... but I'm just saying that no one should buy this rifle to be used as a target rifle... this gun is a plinker no more and no less.. as long as your plinking at 200yrds and not expecting 1 hole groups all is good

"...isn't the effective range of .22lr about 100 yards?"

Not so, we just had a 22 Rimfire Match at 200 Yards, and the best group shot was under 3" for 10 shots. I shot a 3.5" group -- of 15 rounds -- in a practice session, off the bench, using my T/C Benchmark and a Nikon 4-16X scope. (No wind that evening...)

So they CAN be accurate at 200 yards or beyond!!!

But you do have to account for a 55 INCH bullet drop below a 50-yard zero... Most scopes won't cut it... And the wind will move you 14" at 10 mph, more if it's gusting...

Oh yeah... The wind got me on the day of the match; the Top 3 Shooters all shot centerfire benchrest and were top-notch wind readers.

I gotta tell you though... That was addicting! Not only will we have another 200 Yard Match, some of the boys are now talking about the 300 yard berm we have.........

Tight groups!

Short range would be to 300 yards, mid range 400-600, long range would be 800 to 1000.

I'd like to give the 15-22 a go at 800-1000 meter target.... but where I shoot there's a roof over the shooting stations. ;)

Brett,

You never came across as negative, I never took it as such. Now the guy above us? I dunno.... :)

For the 15/22 i consider 100 yards long range if you plan on being serious about about any groups.
If your doing it for fun, Anything past 100 yards is long range.

I get some flak for accuracy testing the 15/22 even at 50 yards. Its completely the wrong gun for the job, But its fun as heck doing it.

As far as the 15/22 goes its not going to do well past 100 yards imo.
My gun will only shoot decent groups at 50 yards with subsonic ammo, High velocity ammo which you will need past 100 yards shoots horrible 2"-3" groups even at 50 yards.

220 yards! Wow. I have been able to hit hard rive disks (4") at 100 and was real proud of that.
