Gentlemen:

I ran across this image somewhere and liked the view of the big Smith. The photo is a publicity pic for a long forgotten 1986 ABC TV series called "Sledgehammer" starring actor David Rasche. Here Sledgehammer appears to be channeling Clint Eastwood as Dirty Harry Callahan.

It turns out that he was indeed channeling Dirty Harry as the show was supposedly a satirical spin on the Dirty Harry motion pictures. Alas, although Dirty Harry's appeal continues to this day Sledgehammer had no staying power. It was cancelled after 2 seasons. Frankly, I don't remember a thing about that show.

Anyone know what Sledgehammer's revolver is? It's hard to tell but it turns out that it is a Model 629 in .44 Magnum. How about those sporty stocks? Wonder where old Sledgehammer's M629 is today?

I figured a M-629 or M-657, a .41 Magnum. Looks stainless and those are the likely candidates.

Was the actor ever in anything else?

He's had quite a few other bit parts.
One of the more recent ones was in the series Madame Secretary (one of my wife's favorites).
I kinda thought Sledge Hammer was pretty funny.
Very tongue-in-cheek - just my kind of humor.

I was a kid and watched reruns in the early 90s and thought it was great. When he lost his S&W and had to settle for a pocket gun, which he lost inside his 629 shoulder holster. Or when he got pissed that they fixed the bullet holes in his car so he was forced to add them again!!!

My favorite scene was the one where Hammer limps into a wedding and sits down next to Dori. She asked him if he got hurt. He said no, he left his gun at home. Being without his gun left him walking lopsided because he was (physically) unbalanced.

Or the one where he catches a bullet in his teeth. When his partner asks him to show her how it's done Hammer reply that he can't because he was only shown how to do it once!!![emoji3]

My fav was when he won the Elvis-impersonator contest without singing one intelligible word.

Wasn’t it a 629?

Sledgehammer:

Taking target practice in his apartment. Then yelling at the neighbors to be quiet.

The pillow for his M629.

On his way to work, he comes upon a sniper in an apartment building. He uses an M72A2 LAW to DESTROY THE BUILDING.

Didn't the first season end with a NUCLEAR WAR cliffhanger?

The "fact" he was related to Ghandi (who was the ostracised "white sheep" of the family).

My favorite David Rache role was the dad/pro football kicker in BINGO (kid's movie about a dog). I had a friend growing up whose dad was EXACTLY like that.

I liked when he brought home a VHS tape that put a moving target on his TV screen that he shot...once.

There were a lot of references to his gun being a .44 Magnum, and being stainless, I knew it to be a 629. In fact I even went out and bought one when the show was popular.

One time his 629 was lost or taken away...I can’t remember...and he went to check out another from the armory. All they would give him was a .22. I think that is the episode Arik is referring to.

Ah...Dori...Anne Marie Martin is her name and she has the prettiest piercing blue eyes. She always came off as the smarter, more serious of the duo. The Captain was pretty funny too. Always seemed like he was going to blow a gasket at Sledge’s antics.

Without further ado, I give you Anne Marie Martin:

The producers didn't know they were getting renewed for a second season so they ended the first season with a nuclear warhead detonating after Hammer tried to defuse it, IIRC. So when the second season started they just kind of ignored the whole thing. I think they made a brief mention of it at the beginning, but then continued the second season like nothing ever happened.

File this under “you learn something new everyday:” Anne Marie Martin...AKA Dori...was married to novelist Michael Crichton, one of my favorite authors!
