That's why our cats are kept indoors. Domestic cats are the primary predators of small mammals and ground nesting birds. I know this is not a popular opinion.

I agree with you. And that's a commendable and humane decision on your part. Your Best Feline Friends should live to a ripe old age.
If I were you, I wouldn't give a second thought as to whether my opinion is popular or unpopular.
If it were not for the neighbors outdoors cat we would be over run with voles and chipmunks. Chipmunks are nothing more than mice with nicer clothes. They undermine our rock walls with all their den building, and we have to re-build the walls regularly. They get into my garage and leave organic landmines on my workbenches and shelves. The cat keeps them under control. At no time can I look out and not see munks along our rock walls. I don't hate them but they definitely need control. When the cat can not keep up I have to get the 22 rifle out.
I just let my cat do what he was built to do. Figure it's meaner to have him staring out a window in depression than to let him kill stuff that I'm not friends with, which is what he was built to do . . .

But I will bet you are one of those who supports re-introduction of wolves into the Rocky Mountain areas of Montana, Wyoming, Idaho, Utah, etc. without regard that they are one of the apex predators of exactly the same animals that you worry so much about domestic (and feral) cats prey upon. Not to mention the young of Deer, Elk, and all other game species! They are both doing exactly what GOD created them to do!
