"Social Grade??" 50 Per Cent for NOTHING!

We have heard about "social promotions" -
the practice promoting a child to the next grade level regardless of skill mastery in the belief that it will promote self-esteem.

West Gate K-8 School in Port St. Lucie, FL apparently believes in "social grading". "NO ZERO'S- LOWEST POSSIBLE GRADE IS 50%."

Teacher fired for refusing to give a 50% grade to students not handing anything in.

Teacher Diane Tirado Says She Was Fired for Giving Students 'Zeros' at West Gate K-8 School in Port St. Lucie, Florida

With standards like this, how much is any diploma from that school system worth. Printed on Charmin, Angel Soft, or Scott ??

High School Diplomas have become devalued "currency." As long as you can fog a mirror and didn't get into serious trouble you will get a degree deserved or not.

I've been working in public high schools since 2003 and students are getting dumber and ruder every year.

The school board says that's not the reason for her dismissal. Yet the news showed the policy in black and white.

Coming home just now I had the pleasure of being just behind the middle school bus. Those kids are rude and think the street is their sidewalk. I'd wager that their parents are just as rude.

Each generation seems to be getting worse.

In other news, Millennials are getting married later and staying married longer.

This no joke. My daughter gamed the system for years doing almost nothing and pretty much daring any of her teachers to flunk her. When I asked her why she did so little, she answered that she got as good of grades as anyone who studied. After looking into it, she was right. She is in a different school now and has to work, but that was an eye opener for me. Evidently, "No child left behind" is often interpreted that everyone who registers passes, not unlike the participation trophies in kids sports.

My sister was a teacher in the public schools. She told a story about why she quit. Seems she had some kid in her class who was fairly smart but wouldn't do the work and, worse, was often disruptive, creating a crappy learning environment for all. He managed to do ok on the tests and got a "C" for the year.

His dad complained to the principle that this mediocre grade might keep the young scholar from being admitted to the best universities and may ultimately keep him out of med school. So the principle told my sister to raise his grade (to a "B" or "A", I don't remember). She refused, mentioning that a lot of kids who worked hard didn't earn that high a grade. He ordered her to change it and she told him "If you want it changed, change it yourself." He did. She quit.

No one even tries to change the system so who is to blame? People need to take responsibility for themselves and their children. Most of the people I deal with aren't any better than the kids they send to school. Americans are not what they used to be,we let the government take care of it and don't get involved and get just what we deserve and some would say more than most deserve.
