SODA BRAND MUSINGS (an observation)................

Tonic Water

In a previous post I mentioned that we always keep on hand, a few, 1 liter bottles, of one of the many kinds of tonic water, available. Schweppes is our favored brand, but any brand will suffice. The reason being, it contains, quinine, and Quinine will almost instantly, stop muscle cramps.

When I grew up in NJ the local soda was Brookdales.
My father would buy it by the case mix-n-match your choice flavors.
You had to return the bottles for deposit. I remember some looked like they'd been refilled dozens of times.

Canada Dry Bold Ginger Ale or Vernors is what we drink. I been down now for 16months and have gained 25lbs laying around drinking pop and snacking. Going to do away with soda and baked goods, cookies ect. Didn’t help that I quit smoking, cold Turkey. I had been 155 since high school.
Had to give away my close and even a new gun belt snubby made me.

Corn-syrup generation here, sadly. As a kid, we would drink Kool-Aide and stuff for playing with friends or baseball games and such. Soda was usually off-brand local stuff, because most of the parents were thrifty. :)

It has only been in the past 5 or so years, that I tasted Coke with cane sugar, Sprite (from Mexico), and some others made with natural sugar.

Wow, what a difference. Only "need" to drink one, versus the other stuff that you can keep on a'going.

Growing up we would sometimes buy a mixed case of soda made by Hammer. Very similar to the above, return bottles and a case. The bottles had a unique design on them cast into the glass.

Some friends would get the Hoffman brand. Back in the 1980s, Billy Crystal would mention them in a skit on SNL. " Beverages by Hoffman"

I would give a lot to be able to walk the mile and a half again to the little store down the road from my grandparents' farm in Arkansas, and pull a cold Grapette from the ice...It was one of those coolers that held the bottles up by the neck suspended in crushed ice...You slid the bottle to the end, and went inside to pay the man......Ben

Not much into seltzers, my wife likes it, we call it sparklin water. I have found nothing kills my leg cramps faster than Canada Dry Tonic Water (W/Quinine) Its the Quinine and the only place you can get it is in tonic water, hence the name. I keep it in the fridge just for those times when a leg or foot cramp gets the better of me. The minute a cramp sets in, if I go get a glass of tonic water it will calm down and go away within five minutes or less, its amazing. If I wait till it gets going, it takes a bit longer.
