Hey folks,
Other than Hoppes #9, which is all I've ever used, what is a good lead cleaning solvent that won't harm the finish?

Not really a "solvent" but I sometimes leave a Kroil soaked patch in the bore overnight. It can help loosen up the lead.

I have a couple products that remove lead & copper & they all caution about using on blued finishes...

I USE SHOOTERS CHOICE LEAD REMOVAL FORMULA ON ALL MY GUNS IT SEEMS TO GET INTO THE PORES AND THE MORE YOU USE IT THE EASIER THEY SEEM TO CLEAN UP I ALSO USE TRAIL BOSS POWDER AND LAZER CAST BULLETS IN ALL MY RELOADS

Hoppes #9 is a fine cleaning solvent and it will not harm the finish. But my experience says there are much better solvents for removing lead or copper.

For lead, I soak the bore with Ed's Red (about the same as Kroil) overnight. It seeps under the lead making removal much easier. Then I use either a Lewis Lead remover, or some strands from a pure copper Chore Boy wrapped around a worn out brass brush. The lead comes out in flakes. Not much effort at all.

I was reading on here about Hoppes hurting some type of aluminum finish.

I wonder about solvents on my 1968 SBH. I have been using Balistol. I am not saying it is good, but I have been using it. Though I read on here it will eat at brass. So I don't use it on guns left loaded.

I have also tried rubbing alcohol on semi auto, figuring it would dry clean. Saw it on Hickock45.

My all-time-favorite cleaner, lubricant & preservative is the #2 Rig Oil. Been using it for 30+ years and every time I have strayed (always like trying new stuff), I quickly return to this tried & true product. I prefer the 4.5 ounce liquid can with spout over the spray can.
