Some favorite DAO Smiths - What's not to like

Note: I looked at the wrong gun when initially typed this. Looking at the pictures again, the 3983 uses the round firing pin retainer.

Going a bit further into wishful thinking land. I noticed that the firing pin retainer is the same shape as the later TSW DAO guns. I'm idly wondering if the guns would be as easily converted to DA/SA as those later TSW guns.

Not that it's likely to happen as the polymer framed guns are easier to make and more profitable.

Let’s bring it to the top again!

A seldom encountered 3953TSW and a 1 of 10 known to exist NYPD prototype 3983.

That’s an awesome set right there. Love the DAO pistols, I just never seem to hang onto them though.

Sharing a few pics of xx44 xx46 DAO

Nice pics everyone !! I have a 5946, 2 4046's, and the pictured 4044 4046 and 4046TSW, 6946 and 6944, and like you all, feel lucky and fortunate to have found these.

The Stainless semi's are just magnificent chunks of joyous steel for easy shooting fun...thinking of running one for IDPA...anyone use the Duty S&W duties for IDPA?

Really enjoy the DOA triggers and the TSW is even better...smooth action on all. need a .45 or two for my collection ... or do I ??

Thanks for sharing and showing off everyone...great to see some beautiful SMITH and Wesson history here !! 3RD Gen Friend

Cheating a bit...

As a young LEO in the '60's, we were issued Colt revolvers. Nice gun but a bit inadequate given the 6 round cylinder, slow reload, bulky pouches and "poor" sights. The "poor" sights allowed me to "miss" more center-mass shots than good ones. I asked if I could carry the S&W 39 and when all my shots were now "dead-on", I was permitted to switch. The senior officers thought I wasn't a good partner because now I couldn't supply others with ammo if they needed it. Slowly, the youngers came around to wanting to switch but they all did well on the range with the .38's so were denied. Later in my career, I was fortunate to be issued Sig/Beretta/etc. but off duty I carried my 39. Later I bought several 3903s in different forms and today, in my '80's, they are still my daily sidearm. I get the urge to go with one of the newer versions of a S&W 9, but just can't "pull that trigger." 39 zero three is the gun for ME! My backup is a High Standard Derringer in .22 Magnum. If I miss with that bullet, the flame alone will do the job!
