Somehow, I don't think I can save this Victory model.

It was apparently turned into a paperweight by the military at the end of WW2. It's little more than an interesting hunk of scrap now.

Didn't I see that listed on GoBroker.com? It was described thusly:

"Beautiful vet bring-back, a S&W Victory model that went down with a Navy pilot, possibly George H.W. Bush (needs more research). Due to the dunking it has some light surface rust that should clean up nicely. It hasn't been fired since WWII so you may want to have your gunsmith check it out. Overall, a beautiful representative piece that has 'been there, done that!'"

I was going to list it that way, along with "might need a few parts". Most prominently, I'd have highlighted "No internal lock or MIM parts!".

I'm not into it for much, but I hadn't seen the worst of it when I purchased it, and had hoped that the frame might somehow be salvageable. No such luch. I think that I'll put the least mutilated side facing out and put it in a shadow box, then set it near the door. That way if I'm robbed, a thief might think "cool, a gun!" grab it and run.

I also now have an entry for the next "who has the ugliest gun threat".

Gator, all it needs is a case of WD40, a large carton of 000 steel wool, and about ten years of your life. Use a touch of cold blue and then shine her up with Renaissance wax as a final touch and no one will know the difference!

(PS: Looks like a Roper target hammer to me!)

Xavier:
You know you are decreasing the collector value by adding a non-original part to your revolver, don't you?

Has it been refinished?

I could definitely use one of those! It would be perfect for fitting grips to without worrying about damaging the finish! I've got some pieces of mammoth and stag that I need to work on.

Yep, definitely finish-challenged.

Would you mind posting the complete serial and any markings on the topstrap and butt that are still visible? We will add them to the Victory Database along with the notation that it has been demilled.

Thanks.

V28343 as near as I can make out. There are no other markings on mine save the SW roll mark, patent dates, caliber, and "Made in USA".

is that the one that came out of Tucson? I saw it and marked it and then forgot about it. If it is, you got it at a great price.

I don't know if it's the work of the military or not, but our tax dollars most certainly paid to have this K-38 cut (K-38 guess based on target hammer and trigger). Just plain sad.

These photos remind me of an old "Medical Jurisprudence and Toxicology" text that used to give me nightmares because of its graphic depictions of untimely (and often radical) human demise. Sad...if only they could talk. -S2
