Gatorfarmer, I saw something in the exhibit hall at the NRA convention that made me think of you and remember some of your previous posts; the Stoeger Tactical Coach Gun.

I'm not making this up, it's their coach gun with a fiberglass stock, black matte finish, a Burris Speed Dot shotgun sight, a Picatinney rail mounted on top at the breach end of the barrels, and a second rail mounted underneath at the muzzle end with a light attached.

It seems tactical knows no bounds...

I was actually able to find a picture of it on-line. The one at the show was similar but had a Burris shotgun Speeddot mounted rather than the larger sight in this picture.

BANG....BANG... OK, now what do I do with all this crap that is hanging off this club?

It's actually not the worst idea. It would allow someone to mount a light on a coach gun via a method other than duct tape. For some folks, it's just easier to learn to use a SxS.

If they offer it in nickel, I'd probably buy one. I used to have a nickel Stoeger that someone had mounted fiber optic sights on. It was a handy little gun.

Gator, I usually agree with just about everything that you have to say that revolves around the word "tactical". This time I have got to invoke the "to each his/her own." mantra.

To me, a coach gun is just that. An up close "get offa my porch" type gun. I can see where the forward rail under the muzzle end could be useful for a flashlight, but that's about it. I really like my scatterguns, but a SxS is just not tacticool!

The whole "lipstick on a pig" thing comes to mind.

Some countries, such as the UK, ban or make difficult the ownership of pump action shotguns. Folks there still like to have some gadgets though. The American market for a railed SxS might well be an afterthought with much of the production meant for other areas.

Marlin should make a lever action replete with plenty of rails, it'd sell.

The prior owner of the Aimpoint Comp M that I have actually used it on his 870 for duck hunting. Optical sights on shotguns are oddly useful.

Clint Smith has made some cash touting the SXS as a viable self defense firearm, if that's what you are used to or have handy. I'm not exactly impressed with the single trigger set-up. Should be a more KISS type 2 trigger gun.

Folks would be very surprised how fast a SXS can shoot. I was at a turkey shoot once at about 12 years old. I had been shooting this sxs Stevens for several years and wasn't too bad with it. I had a hard time centering the pattern at 20 yards on the 8.5x11" sheet of paper they used, but did ok. When it cam time to do the "pool" sheets, they handed me 2 shells (2 sheets) and said "go ahead". They had put the sheets next to each other on the line and I went "Bang Bang" as fast as I could. They smuggly went to collect them, figuring they wouldn't be too shot up, and found them completely covered with shot. It had to have taken a LOOOOOOONG time to figure out which pellet was closest to the x on each sheet. We didn't stick around to find out. I probably wouldn't have been invited to do that again, anyway.

Sixty years ago, my older brother was paid to keep an eye out for night-time predators at a local farm with a big chicken house. The rig he worked up - a double-barrel Stevens 16 gauge with a 2-cell flash light taped below the barrels - helped him take a number of racoons and an occasional fox out of competition. Looked a lot like the Stoeger without the fancy sight.
