So there I am with two of my friends shooting at a 2' wide x 3' tall piece of steel at 300yds. Oh, I'm shooting my 1961 S-prefix Model 29 with 6 1/2" barrel. I'm shooting 180 grainers and holding a pinch over half a front sight. Yes, I read Elmer Keiths' "Hell....,I was there". Clang, clang, miss, clang, miss, clang,......And something hits me in the nose. I'm thrilled to pieces to be hitting this target in front of my friends and another guy on the range with his mouth hanging open. This is too good to be true. I empty the cylinder, reload, and pull the S-prefix up for another go-round. As I level off and get the sight picture I see half of the rear sight blade gone!!!! My question is how much of a job is it to change the rear blade and/or find a period one...or does it matter if it's period to the gun? I'd appreciate some feedback as I want the Old Girl back in action. I can't stand one of my kids being all banged-up. Seriously, What would be your recommendations?? Thanks ---Sprefix

Order one from Smith or Brownells. You tighten the screw all the way to the left and the nut holding it together will break. Replace the sight and the new nut, stake them in and you are all set.

Check out page three of the FAQs in the revolver section. You'll find the instructions. From some other posts lately, if you have a white outline rear sight blade, you may have trouble finding one with the channel that holds the paint. The white outline on the new ones seems to be inferior to the original. Good luck.
