I don't want to ship any of my firearms to anywhere for any reason. This being said, having access to replacement parts is high on my list of "pros" when selecting a brand of firearm to purchase. Why doesn't Smith offer replacement parts to its customers? I was on Mossbergs website the other day and found you could view a complete breakdown of their firearms, click on any one of those parts, put it in your shopping cart and buy it. Sig isn't quite that easy, but their owners manuals do show a complete breakdown of the gun, allowing you to call and order whatever you want. Why does Smith hold their parts hostage???

I believe their restrictions on the sale of some fitted parts of various models stems largely from concerns about safety and company liability. There would also be the issue of compliance with federal laws restricting sale of serialized components such as frames, etc.

In the S&W published parts books I have from 1995, these restrictions included parts sold only to company trained armorers, and S&W authorized warranty stations. In addition, a few of the parts were marked as "factory installed only".

There were/are actually not many restricted parts. For example, in the K series revolver, of the 88 parts listed in the parts manual, only approx. 9 parts were marked as "restricted", and included such components as barrels (magnum models), sideplates, frames, cylinders and extractors.

Thank you for setting me straight. I guess not finding a parts diagram in the owners manual/website I assumed incorrectly.

Over the years I've inherited parts, bought them at gun shows, bought them from S&W, Colt, Marlin, Winchester, Brownells, Midway, Numrich, Jack First, etc........ The point is I will always purchase extra's when I buy a part (especially if it is a common one that is prone to fail or wear) and will buy at gun shows if the prices are right even if I do not need them at the time. I am certainly not a horder of parts but I will always have a few spare triggers, hammers, springs of all types, screws, grips, sights, hands etc on hand.

I can not tell you how many times they've come in handy!! There are a few times that I've purchased revolvers in almost pristine cosmetic condition that are in need of mechanical repair - and if I know exactly what the problem is and know I have the parts I get a hell of a deal on the gun. An hour or two later after fitting the new part, they are as good as new - maybe better. :)
