Happy New Year, everybody. I am new to the forum but not S&W revolvers. When I was ten years old my father taught my to shoot using his 686; years later, I acquired my own 586, which is the subject of my question to you today.

I am disappointed to see that S&W no longer makes the 586. I was thinking it would be nice to swap the six-inch barrel in my gun with a four-incher, do a trigger job, and give it a nice refinished. I had hoped to buy the four-inch barrel from S&W. Is there a source, at all, for one? Or am I out of luck?

If you can't find a 4" 586 barrel a 4" M19 might fit.
It doesn't have the full underlug but I think they use the same frame.

You might be able to find one in the classifieds, wanted to buy section or on gunbroker if you are patient. However, I would just buy a 4 inch gun and keep the 6 inch as is. You can probably find a 4 inch for the price of buying the barrel and getting a reblue.

I found my 4" barrel in the forum classifieds, it arrived today and I'm calling S&W Monday to see how much they will charge to install the barrel when I send the gun in for the "M" modification.

This might sound a little crazy, but how 'bout a 686 bbl and a two-tone revolver??? Change out the cylinder, too???

Similarly crazy - I know Smith has the 4" .357 Mountain Gun barrels available for ~$137, but they're of course stainless also.
