Quite a few M686 threads running, how about some Mod 586's, specifically Special versions.

Here's a few Special versions that either I had, or still do, in the collection. All original M586's are cool, meaning the ones without the incorporation of recent safety feature enhancements....

One of the coolest ones made were the special run of 1989 Matte blue versions, made in 4" and 6" barrel lengths..

Here's a 4" that was in my collection, one that made it to the "why did I sell it" status long ago... :(

Here's another, this one is still in my collection, this was a run of guns made for export to Brazil, these chambered in .38 Special.

Original pic of the pair I owned back then:

Here's the one I still have, had the factory mill off the front sight and install a Patridge, a great shooting (and looking - IMO :)) gun:

How about a pair of the GIGN models from the Performance Center?

Traded one away to a friend some time back, but still have one, a fav.... :)

Gotta love the Performance Center L-Comp, 3" barrel with porting and just plain cool looking - all business - gun.. This is a 7 shooter, made for Camfour.

Of course, it wouldn't be a Special M586 post without including the very scarce M586-4 with 3" barrel. Absolutely my favorite M586....

I have one of the matte finish 1989 586s... a round butt 4" L frame is probably the best all 'round .357 there is. A fried bought one when they were distributor closeouts back in the 1990s, and after shooting it I tried to buy it from him, but he would never sell. I finally found one LNIB a few years ago.

A dealer that I know.

Several years ago he had one that he told me was a production overrun from a Japanese law enforcement agency that ordered a bunch of them but chambered in .38Special only. Now I never checked the veracity of that statement but he did have one for sale.

In late 1999, I took over managing a small police certification academy that needed substantial reform. The sidearms the academy owned were 586s purchased in the early 80s that had been used by 60-75 students annually for basic training and qualification. Every one was serviceable and accurate in 2000 when I used the as part of a trade for Glocks in 40.

Some very nice and unusual 586s Rob. Nothing unusual about this one except it was the only one I had and an absolutely beautiful revolver in great condition. It went in trade for a Barrett Fieldcraft 308 a couple years ago. Rarely trade a S&W for a non S&W product but that Barrett has become my absolute favorite 308.

I think the 586, in any of its variations, is the perfect revolver. Yeah I love my N and K frames. Some of them are special in their own ways. But the 586 is just right. The first on I saw was a 6" when they first arrived on the scene. I wasn't content until I had one. I still have it; a well-used 6" no-dash. It's not going anywhere.

What are the stocks on the 586 with the Patridge sight? They are gorgeous!

Jeff,

I'm sure there were a few trades I made in the past where a S&W went for some other brand, but I try to not-remember them (and I try not to admit it.... :D)

Only this one that was sitting on the forum with fuzzy pics some years back. Had no idea what it was when it arrived other than a 586 at a good price.

Adorned with Culina’s.

That's quite a looker with those Culina grips, very cool, the contrast really set's them off, what is the wood??...

Not sure how special these are , but here are a few of mine.

First is a NIB example of one of the original AAA series with a somewhat uncommon 2 piece box.

Next is another one of the Brazilian 38s. There were reportedly 23 that were sent to US distribution, so that’s Rob’s , mine and 21 others. It’s NIB as well.

Last is a nothing special 586 - 0 that’s unmolested.

This one is 'special' to me.

First of all, it was a gift from my department. Yep, free. Ha.

Then I sent it to Wilson's in Barryville, Arkansas and had the forcing cone rec-cut, trigger polished smooth, complete action job and to top it off I had them Mag-na-port it.

I did some 'IT' work for my wife's company and took the money they paid me to cover all the Wilson's charges.

Sweet deal all the way around.

enjoy,

Got a couple; one a 6" was originally part of a three-piece set which included a S&W rifle and knife. Don't have my SCS&W but it's in there somewhere.

The other is a 4" -5 (?) from 1996 factory round -butt with a set of Spegel extended boot-grip in Birdseye maple. My BBQ gun!!!

Both are safe-queens cus when I need a .357 I grab my 4" 686 I round-butted back in the mid-80s w/ Pachmayer Compact grips ...... stainless and rubber is just too easy to live life with.

S&W Model 586s

Quote from Krogen: "I think the 586, in any of its variations, is the perfect revolver. Yeah I love my N and K frames. Some of them are special in their own ways. But the 586 is just right."

I think you nailed it.

I have two 586s. One is a 6" commemorative commissioned by my department. It is in a shadow box along with two challenge coins (to show back and front). It is on the wall above the plaque with my retirement badge. It takes me back to the era when we carried revolvers that were works of industrial art. Obviously this one is display only.

My other 586 is also a 6". I ordered it with the tall Patridge front sight to allow a neck hold at the 50 yard line in PPC shooting. This one has received just about all the customizing possible while still retaining the factory barrel, and thus, in my opinion, the original engineering concept of the 'L' frames.

This one is a shooter. Every time I roll back the trigger in DA I am again convinced of the merit of this design.

For EDC, I, like countless others, carry a polymer framed compact semi-auto 9mm pistol. All factors considered, I think it is the most practical tool for the purpose.

I also enjoy shooting it, given that shooting itself is very enjoyable. But the 'L' frames are in a class by themselves, at least to us, uh, vintage types.
