Special order number?

Just realized there is a special oeder number on my 1982 vintage 3 inch round butt Model 13-3 box. Anyone know what a special order number of 3306 means?

The Spec.Ord. number is usually a Julian date. In this case 3306 would relate to the 306th day of 1983, or November 2, 1983. This would be the date the gun was packed, which would be very close to the date the gun was "put up" in S&W factory parlance.

There are cases where the last 3 digits exceed 365 or 366. In those cases it is anybody's guess!

There are actually two definitions of Julian date, this is the one that is most often used, particularly by the military.

Thanks! I was hoping it was a specific special order number for an agency or something, but that's good information on something I'd never noticed before.
