Speed Loaders...which ones?

Aluminum body HKS speed loaders

I’m going to divert duppie’s thread off of 27s &28s with some miscellaneous chat about speed loaders, but at least this isn’t an illegal hijacking.

For a gun show souvenir I spent a couple bucks on an HKS Python speed loader that is like all the other pre-A loaders except for its gold anodized aluminum body. I’ve never seen another aluminum HKS loader. Do any of you know if it is one of HKS’s earliest loaders or anything about it?

A while back I shot local matches with a few Safariland Comp Is & IIs mixed in with my bag of HKS loaders. I found no difference in time between them. Maybe some real champs can demonstrate a loss of time twisting HKS’s knobs, but I couldn’t, and I did well enough to win the league. Today I’d grab an HKS and not even consider a Safariland Comp I or II simply because I haven’t practiced with one in 10 years. I’ve been using HKSs regularly for 40 years so they’re a habit like stepping on my car’s brake pedal. As previously posted, that’s more important than the model of loader chosen. Besides, I find a few bargain priced HKS loaders at most of the gun shows I attend, and after finding only over priced guns, I feel better bringing back little souvenirs to justify the long drive.

-db-,
Thank-you for the link to that old thread. I enjoyed it. I'll also read the speed loader history thread from the Japanese website when I get time. Since the old S&Wforum thread contains a lot of different opinions on when speed loaders came into use, I'll add I remember wearing HKS loaders on my belt in 1976. Through the early 1980s they were by far the most widely used speed loader in my area. I guess I have to trim back the 40 year number about 10%. Exactness didn't seem relevant when I typed 40 years. Regardless, HKS's product has stood the test of time well.

The gold aluminum body HKS loader was the first version produced. I still have one for K frame purchased in the early 1970's.

They're a neat little collector item. Mine is in excellent condition. I'll probably never own the Python mine is labeled for, but I recently bought the Python's 1910 vintage grandfather, an Officer's Model, and Python loaders fit L frames.
I was surprised to see Dade loaders recommended as still one of the best for CCW in the You Tube video posted by -db-. I have one K size Dade loader that was another gun show souvenir. I thought Dade loaders were long discontinued and made obsolete by HKS and others that don’t loose cartridges if you drop them.

My vote is for the KEL-LITE Firepower! Just kidding. I'm an HKS fan.
