Speed Loaders

If speedloaders is the question, Safariland is the answer.

I use Safariland Comp I speedloaders for my N and J frames and Comp IIs for my K frames.

Wyatt,

I've always used HKS and have no complaints. Have used them in a Ruger GP-100 and various S&W's of different frame sizes/calibers.

Why do you like the Safariland?

Not that I'll be running out to buy some, just wondering if I'm missing something...

I was using HKS until I tried Safariland speed loaders and then changed over all my loaders to Safariland.

As to why, I like the ease of just pushing the loader down to release the rounds instead of having to turn the knob on the top of the HKS speedloaders. If you like the knob better I see nothing wrong with HKS, I just prefer Safariland.

Also, the Safariland Comp I loaders are very small since they don't use a knob which extends above the top of the speedloader. Even the Comp II loaders are smaller than the HKS speedloaders. IMO there is no substitute for Safariland Comp III loaders for use in competition.

Some shooters like Maxfire speedloaders but I find them way too big for conceal carry.

1) They are caveman simple to use. Push on the body of a loader down against the cylinder and all rounds release with a pop. It takes no additional movements like HKS does.

2) Rounds are held positively locked in the loader until you want them to go. There is no chance of a knob turning or a button being pushed accidentally in your pocket and dumping your ammo.

3) I think you are making a mistake by not "running out and buying one". Spend $10 and find out for yourself. If you don't like it I'll give you what you paid for it.

I Have always used HKS speed loaders, I have several of them for M36 M10 M547 & recently aquired three Safariland Comp IIs for my M547.
After using the Comp IIs I'll have to say that the Safarilands are easier to speedload with but are a bit harder to load, but with practice they can be loaded without too much trouble.
The Model 547 speed loaders have been discontinued & I was lucky to score them in either the HKS or Safariland, Thanks to the Forum Members here who hooked me up!
Now To Score 3-4 for the 586/686..

I've used the same HKS loaders for the L size S&W since the late '80's. Have dropped them on cement, gravel, grass, mud you name it. Never had one break. Some look pretty ratty but they still work. They may or may not be as fast as some but they are bull stong and have no trick parts to worry about. I stay with them because in 20+ years I've never needed to worry about them.

Ditto on Safariland Comp 1's. Big advantage over HKS: It's not necessary to keep the cylinder from freewheeling while you dump the rounds. Also rounds are spring propelled into position instead of by gravity.

Back in the day, I had some speedloaders that had an external coil spring wrapped around the outside of the speedloader. The spring corresponded with the rim of the cartridge and when pushed, the rounds dropped into the cylinder of the gun.

Safariland makes good loaders, but they do not make as many models as HKS. I have found no appreciable difference in speed - I said appreciable - and HKS are very rugged. My answer is that if I am in competition, I have always opted for Safariland, but for carry for defense, I prefer HKS. I cannot justify it any further than that. Everyone you talk to will have his or her own opinion on this issue. Get one of each and try them both.
