What speedloaders are best? Should I go with HKS or Safariland? Also, other than the size, is there any difference between Safari comp1 and comp2?

I use HKS but that's because my wife and son are familiar with the operation of those. I've used Safariland and others with good results.

I would say pick one style and stick to it for best results.

I have always used HKS. Never tried safariland because they only make them, at least as far as I know, for .38/.357. I carry .44 and .45 caliber revolvers frequently (have a M25-5 on my hip right now) and don't want to switch between two types.

I prefer Safariland. I tried HKS, but with those,
you have to hold the cylinder in place with one hand.
If you don't, it turns when you turn the release knob
and the bullets don't release. As you turn the knob
clockwise, both the knob and cylinder turn together
unless you hold the cylinder with your other hand.
With the Safariland, just push in and the rounds drop in.

I know that this is the concealed carry forum...

And, with my mounting collection of Dade, HKS, Safariland, Cartridge Clip Company of New York, Webley, SL Variant and Jetloader speed loaders...

I would have to recommend sending the cylinder and yoke off for a moonclip conversion. You don't have to use moonclips with it...but they are much faster to load, and with ammunition prices going higher, finding your spent brass does become an issue.

It's all about trade-offs and compromise.
Speed of reload, concealment, ease of operation.

*The HKS is reliable and the easiest to use, but not as fast.
*Moonclips are the fastest and you can find your casing much easier after being fired, but you do have to use a tool to unload the clips, and sometimes to load it depending on your strength and brand of ammunition used. Also, the moonclips can be bent if stepped on (of course, an HKS can break if stepped on too).
*Jetloaders and Comp-III Safarilands are the fastest speedloaders, period. They are durable and easy to use, but not as concealable.
*Speed strips are the most convenient and concealable, have no moving parts and are the least likely to break. However, they are the slowest way to reload.

Safariland speedloaders, which has three different styles depending on your model of revolver...J-frame is only offered in the Comp I

Clark Custom... For $100 they'll machine your cylinder to take moonclips. Easy as pie. There are other companies too, go to Moonclips.com

If you need some in .22LR or .22 WMR for your 6, 8,9, or 10-shot revolver from Taurus, S&W or H&R to practice with, Dave's got them... DS-10 Speed Speedloaders. I've really liked mine, and use my .22's more now that ammunition has gone up anyway.

Also, Tuff Products, the first company to offer speed strips in any caliber besides .38/357 and in various round counts too. Worth a look.

Longwitz of Germany is no longer offering/manufacturing the SL Variant speedloader. I guess their price for them exceeded what the market would pay. They were great, but not at $60 each!
I'm not endorsing anyone or anything above, just suggesting options.

I prefer a second loaded gun. To me reloads are for topping off after the shooting is over.

Andy, that's a very informative post and helpful. Thanks.

One more question.

How do you guys carry your speedloaders?

When I carry one of my revolvers, and when I carry speed loaders for it, I put the loader in a jacket pocket closest to the hand I plan to use for reloading. For concealment in those times where a coat is not practical, I prefer speed strips. With some practice, one can make pretty quick relods with them.

That's what I prefer. Your mileage may vary.

Having a number of different speedloaders I have found that I prefer the Bianchi Speed Strips (Model 580) for .38/.357. Easier to carry and fast for loading.

I have both HKS and Safriland. The Safariland a simple and quick, but I have more of the HKS due to finding a supply of used police issue. Both work well.

I bought a couple of speed loaders for my J frame off Ebay recently. They are Dade Machine loader seller says company when out of business several years back. I really like the way they are made. Carry one inside each front pocket and never had an accidental unload.

Check out USAMIKR99 have gun will holster. He has some a K frame listed now

Revolverman,

I too like the design of the Dade loaders they where used by the police around here years ago before the Hi-cap auto craze. I have some in 41 magnum that presents the cartridges to the cylinder in a flared postion that doesn't work so well. The HKS and Safari loaders seem to do better on this point. I do like the Dade release though. The Dade belt holders are nice too. The ebay seller said he was going to have some of the Dade loaders made up in 44mag. in the near future. If it matters Dirty Harry used the Dade loaders in his films.

mtgrs737. Didn't know that about Dirty Harry and the reloader I will check it out. Glad some one else heard of these. I just order 3 more for my K frame.

Thought I was the only one around with a 41. Been shooting and reloading mine for 25 yr. Love it don't even own a 44 mag
