There's been many opinions regarding the Speer #8 data for loading .38 Special 158gr SWC using SR4756 but what about the data for the 110gr jacketed HP? I ask because when looking back in my Speer #8, I see circled 13 grains of SR4756 with a 110gr Jacketed HP. Anyone else tried this brew? Your thoughts?

As one of the proponents of SR 4756, I'd still have some serious doubts about that one. It's only 1 gr less than what I use with a 125 gr in .357 Mag.

The pressure difference between the two cartridges should have more spread than just a couple of grains.

No offense here g17 but for me 110gr bullets are a waste of time in 38spl or 357mag for that matter.

In tests done long ago the 110gr bullets, even when fired from a 357mag simply had no penetration at all. The tests were done on car windshield glass. It was found that they would bounce off even at magnum velocities.

I too am a proponent of SR4756. Just not a big fan of 110gr bullet weights in 38 caliber guns!

FWIW

Paul has given good advice though.

I regularly use 4756 with 125 gr. .38/.357 loads with great results. Not top loads, but warm.

Going to a 110 gr. HP, with appropriate loads, resulted in incomplete burning, and several "bloopers". Many gave different reports.

Yep, good crimp.

I think the powder is too slow for 110's.

None taken Smith and I appreciate the sound advice. I'm not a fan of the 110gr bullets either but I need to collect my 1000 free bullets from Hornady and the only thing I load at this time is 38/357 and 44. When I redeemed last year, Hornady sent me some 240gr XTP's but now only offer 180gr in 44 and 110gr in .357 for the get loaded special. I'm topped out on .44 bullets at this time so was taking a second look at the 357. However, I may just get some .45 bullets and get back to loading them again or something else that I can trade for what I want.

As a matter of fact,I have.In the early 70's,a friend of mine who was an active game warden in Fla. asked me to work up a hot load for his carry gun (an S&W model 10).He specifically wanted a 110 grain bullet because that's what he used in a Super vel load.

I borrowed his gun just long enough to test and work up a load (one afternoon).I don't remember the brand of bullet with certainty but it was definately a 110 gr JHP.The powder was SR4756 and the data I used was from the Speer#8 manual.I recall that the max load listed in the manual was reached without any undue pressure signs and case extraction was smooth.

Afterwards,I loaded the remaining bullets with the aforementioned top end load and gave them to him.He proceeded to use a portion of these on various mediums testing for performance as well as general accuracy. He was delighted with them.

Other than that experience,I've never used 110 gr bullets but I've used a LOT of 125 gr JHPs in the 357 magnum with several different powders including H110 and W296.No problems whatsoever.
