I visited New Zealand and discovered in their Museum of WWII a Spitfire Mk XXII. One of the last built. It was in a alcove all by itself and was totally war equipped. They had a stair and platform that one could get right up and look down into the cockpit. It only had about 300 hrs on the tack. I drooled over that a/c. This one had two mounted 20mms and four more .303 caliber m/gs. It was from the last Wing of the New Zealand AF to fly the Spit. My wife kept wandering off and looking at other things while I looked at every aspect of that Spitfire. A passing maintenance man told me that they pull the plugs and turn over the engine about every 4 to 6 months to keep it oiled properly. I agree that it is one of the best looking mechanical designs of any object bar none. The only thing in my life that makes me wish I were rich is wanting to own and fly something like that. I flew for 33 yrs every thing up thru the T-6 in prep for flying a P-51. Circumstances prevented me from ever flying the P-51 to my everlasting regret. ...........

That big Merlin motor was a heck of a tool. They had to develop a system of flying to bank left then right for a mechanism to dump pure gas into the motor to prevent it stalling. It made the flying unique, the Hurricane shared the same power plant.

Local collector/museum has a restored spitfire that flys regularly along with about 150 other aircraft in airworthy condition that also fly regularly. Last year completed work on the only flying Mosquito. It helps that he also owns an aircraft maintaince school. Many others all around the world awaiting restoration.

Aloha,

Speaking of Spitfires, does anyone know the status of the Spitfires

that were supposed to have been found buried in Burma at the end of WWII?

Had one fly by me while visiting Scotland in 2009. Coming from a memorial show regarding the Arnhem parachute drop. Saw a mess of old C-47's too.

But the Spitfire was VERY memorable. Talk about making some sound!

The Spit: Absolutely, positively, the best-looking aircraft (not best) ever mfg'd IMO. Not a line out of place. Possibly even one of the best looking objects of any kind ever produced.

No, no, no. Sorry ringo. The Mustang is a MUCH better aircraft, but not better-looking. The Corsair was a great fighter and Zero-killer, but it was an ugly chicken-plucker. BTW, all of our carrier-based WWII planes were absolutely mean-looking, as though they personally were aware of what happened at Pearl Harbor.

All WWII prop-driven fighters are worthy of honorable mention and our attention at air shows, IMO.

Per the BBC website there two Spitfires currently finishing up restoration. One is a very early Mk I prior to Battle of Britain what it cost to restore these two must nearly cost what entire squadrons did in 1940

Heh heh,I hear you on that.

Also, tomorrow is the day I THINK,the batteries will be turned on?or that the Staples are taken out.Well, ill know more in less than a day anyways. The staples are driving me nuts--itching all the time.

I'll second the motion.

The Spit was a beautiful airplane, for sure, and a very fine fighter. In the looks department, I always thought the P-38 was a thing of beauty.

The twin Mustang was also a nice looking bird. Wasnt this bird the one that Major Bong flew?? Or am I thinking of Frank Sinatra?::reference to:: Von Ryans Express.;)

Arguably the best looking aircraft ever made.
