Split .38 Special case - Not a reload (pics)

Browsing back thru the thread, it looks like ALK8944 pushed the topic with his considerable knowledge flavored with his usual irritating comments.

Thanks to him, we now know a lot more about berdan vs boxer priming systems than we ever thought about.

Thanks for sharing your knowledge, but not your irritating comments.

I think it's been an OK or better thread, all things considered, including the subject drift. I've learned some stuff, and that never hurts.

These will be my new go-to shotshells, along with some reloads my brother has churned out for me. I carry two shotshells in a J frame in the woods every day, and have three more in a speed strip. In the winter I change over to all ball ammo.

Where did you get those yellow caplets? I have only seen the clear blue ones. Those look a little less brittle and the blue ones, are they? Those aren't components, they are ammo, correct?

The old Speer shot capsules were yellow plastic.

That must be a really OLD box of Speer shot shells, more than 20 years I imagine.

Correct, these came in boxes of 50. I found them a while back at a gunshop that sometimes has vintage and out of production ammo. I have not shot any yet, but they are nickel cases and I'm sure they will work fine.

Way back when, the yellow shot capsules were what Speer sold, both as empty capsules and loaded ammunition. I still have some of the old yellow capsules in my samples drawer on my bench.

Hope this helps.

I also have some yellow capsule shot shells. They are for a .44 mag, however. Now the newer ones I have purchased are blue and they say .44 mag or .44 special.

So out of curiosity I shot both into a 5 gal oil can (similar to a commercial paint bucket), at 20 ft. The yellow penetrated the can and rolled the 5 gallon can over. The blue did not move the can or knock it over. The yellow will not fit into the "S&W M24", so my conclusion is the yellow "magnum label" is much hotter. I wouldn't assume that the yellow capsule automatically means a hotter load though.
