Sport II question - is this spring from the rifle??

Hey guys, brand new here and a brand new rifle owner. I followed the instructions to field strip the rifle, which I did successfully and re-assembled in reverse order, and everything seems to function as expected when dry firing and dry cycling the rifle.

Shorty after I found a very small spring near the area I was working and I'm going crazy thinking it came off of the rifle.

Wondering if any of you have seen this type of spring before or have experience anything "falling out" of the rifle during a field strip?

Did you remove the extractor (the little lever on the bolt that pulls the cartridge case from the chamber) from the bolt? That looks like the spring that gives it leverage.

Nope, did not remove the extractor. I thought that as well but this spring is quite a bit narrower than the extractor spring. But since I never removed the extractor pin, I don't think it can be that one. I appreciate the reply though!

I also emailed S&W customer service with the same question, hopefully someone can definitively tell me that this spring is from my vacuum and not from my brand new rifle.

I haven't even fired it yet, I didn't really touch the lower when field stripping either so I can't imagine that the spring could have "fallen out" of the trigger group, or the upper.

Does anything on the rifle function/not function any differently?
Now I'm waiting for a real AR expert to chime in...
Everything on the rifle functions as I would expect it to. Bolt locks back when I pull the charging handle with an empty magazine, doesn't lock when there is no magazine (but can engage the bolt lock manually), safety switch functions properly, trigger works, mag release works, forward assist works when the bolt isn't fully locked. I dont have any dummy rounds yet to try cycling through, but since I didn't touch the extractor it should work also.

Hoping an AR expert will chime in as well. :-)

I even watched a few build videos and haven't seen this type of spring being used anywhere so far.

The closest thing I could find to this spring would be the disconnecter spring, but the one in question above isn't wider on one end like the disconnecter spring should be, and like I said I hadn't really done anything on the lower that would cause anything to fall out.

Just checked the trigger group and I can see the disconnecter spring in place, trigger/hammer works and locks properly.

I'm dumfounded guys, really thinking this spring isn't from the rifle, but then again where else would the spring have come from?!

Check your sights. There's a detent under the front sight that's powered by a small spring. The front sight adjustment tool depresses the detent and allows you to screw the sight up or down. If that's the spring, the detent will be missing too. Also check the rear sight adjustments. Some use small springs and ball bearings to provide positive clicks for windage and elevation adjustments.

Front sight detent is there, haven't touched it but will check that it depresses when I get back home. Will also check the rear flip up sight. It flips up and locks back as expected but haven't tried adjusting windage, will give that a check as well. Thanks for the advice.

The only other spring I can think of that would be that small is for the bolt release. If that works as it should then I think you have an extra part the fell down into the lower during assembly. I found a spent primer in the trigger group of my MVP when I did the initial field strip and cleaning on it. Since I never fired the rifle to that point, the only source had to be from the factory during proof testing. However, I will keep an eye on spent cases when I shoot some 5.56. I've only shot .223 to this point and all has been fine. But I digress.

If the extractor, ejector, and bolt hold open works as it should, your rifle should be fine. All the other springs are longer, bigger, or are of a different type.

Thank you! Yep, the bolt release works fine and definitely has the spring in there. Your reply gives me peace of mind, because all moving components seem to work as expected on the rifle.

I'll post an update this weekend after I get a chance to test the rifle out on the range.

Sounds good. Actual firing is the best test. If you have some dummy rounds, that's the second best.

The charging handle has a small spring as does the dust cover door detent
Charging handle locks up and I can feel the spring engage, same with dust cover detent. Checked all functions of the rifle short of firing a live round and everything seems to be functioning properly. Good thinking though, I appreciate the response.

The charging handle spring is larger and the dust cover detent is smaller. It is a good thought though.

The selector, take down and pivot pin springs are all smaller and long. The buffer tube retainer spring is longer and fatter.
