Looking at MAGPUL CTR or STR.

I'M assuming the Commercial version is right for this rifle, correct?

I was a huge Magpul CTR fan.......until I bought a rifle with the LMT SOPMOD stock......huge difference in comfort and stability. I love the SOPMOD.

CTR is great, I have one on my BCM but it still has a little wiggle. My MFT Minimalist has zero wiggle, but you have to work it a bit to get it to move after first installing. Worth it if you want no wiggle in your stock.

Couple of similar questions. I unfortunately live in New Jersey, so I have the compliant version with the pinned stock. I really don't like it, it's way too long and I can't shoulder it comfortably. I want to replace it with the mil-spec Magpul MOE fixed carbine stock, and then be able to replace that with a six position collapsible if and when I ever move out of this place. So my questions are:

1) What do I need to replace? I have searched online, and can't tell whether I just need a new buffer tube, or whether I also need a new spring, nut, etc.

2) Can I get a buffer tube that will work with a six position collapsible for later so I don't have to replace that down the road?

3) What is a good brand of buffer tube that fits this well?

Thanks in advance!

The Magpul MOE fixed carbine stock clamps on to a standard receiver extension (buffer tube) from my understanding. It has a short LOP, so make sure that it will conform to any overall length requirements your state may have. If it complies, I would just put it on your rifle as is... wait for any changes to the receiver extension after you leave the state.

Thank you. Unfortunately, that doesn't work, because S&W (stupidly, in my opinion) uses a full length buffer tube on its fully extended version, so if I put the MOE fixed on, it would stick out the back. It's a little hard to explain.

RightNYer, you can make a spacer from PVC pipe so the Fixed Carbine Stock will fit the longer RE. I've done the same to give me a little longer LOP with the fixed carbine stock

Right, but that defeats the whole purpose, in that the fully extended pinned stock is too long for me to shoulder comfortably.

This confuses me. (Probably because I don't have to deal with this silliness where I live... yet)

Are you saying you currently have a carbine stock somehow pinned to a rifle buffer tube?

Haha, you're lucky. Basically, they pin the stock in the fully extended position, but do so in a way that if you were to remove the pin and fully "collapse" it, the tube would be sticking out the back of the stock by at least a few inches.

RightNYer, replace the receiver extension with a standard carbine RE or an A5 RE. Both are short enough to allow the Magpul Fixed Carbine stock to be installed as it should

As to the buffer tube, any milspec should do the job. May have to change the buffer and spring.

I've got the Fixed Carbine stock on mine, and love it though I find it's a little short for me. If it had been available when I went featureless, this is what I think I would have gotten.

Viper Modular Fixed Stock

this one easily allows LOP to be adjusted to user taste.

Thanks, this is perfect. I had no idea something like that existed. I assume no one has argued that this is "collapsible" because you can adjust it?

It's fairly new. Once it's on the rifle, there is no adjustment. Before I would do the final assembly, I would try it out with various combinations of spacers so that I would now what's right. Now, if they made it in gray I would be real tempted to order one.

If you get a standard carbine RE, make sure it's milspec and made from 7075. I know the milspec carbine RE made by MagPul is 7075. If you get one from PSA, be very careful. Some of their "milspec" REs are made of 6061 and they aren't always clear about which one is which. With a carbine RE, you use a carbine buffer and a carbine spring.

Verify what buffer and spring your current RE uses. If it uses a carbine length buffer and carbine length spring, it will fit in a carbine RE. However, if the buffer is longer, such as a rifle buffer, you'll also need to get a carbine buffer and a carbine spring to go with the carbine RE.

I would recommend an A5 style RE assembly over the carbine RE. It helps your AR shoot a little smoother. You don't need an A5 style RE assembly, but if you're going to spend the money on a new RE anyway, it's worth taking a look at.

The two most popular makers of the A5 style RE is VLTOR and MagPul. The VLTOR is called the A5, the Magpul version is called the SR25/M110 Enhanced RE. Both use the A5 length buffer and rifle length spring. Which to get is up to you. VLTOR makes a 6 position and a 7 position RE. The Magpul has 10 positions. I used the 6 position stock with the Carbine Fixed Length. The "ridge" is shorter which allowed me to make a spacer that was a bit longer for more LOP. For an AR I will use and adjustable stock, I will be using the MagPul RE with its ten positions.

Thanks much, this is all very helpful. I have to assume the Sport II has a carbine spring (which should mean a replacement 7075 carbine buffer tube should fit) but if anyone with this rifle can confirm, that would be great.
