Brussel sprouts that is.

These are still coming in fresh and my wife & I love 'em! Steamed and a light coat of butter - heaven.

Wow.
Though I love to eat them, I've never seen them 'on the stem'.
Interesting. I had wondered if they grew like little cabbages, thinking that would be a real pain!

I love them! Grew them a few years back but had to constantly spray with BT to keep the worms away.

I like 'em steamed with butter too, but the best I ever had went like this: fry some bacon, reserve the fat, trim sprouts & cut in half, place cut side down in the fat, add some diced onion, then some crushed garlic - saute until tender then add the crumbled bacon back in - makes even a sprout hater a convert!

Yum, I love those things. Most people hate 'em because they never had them prepared correctly. If done wrong they are awful. I roast 'em with butter & garlic.

How do you roast them??

The trick is to use only the same sized sprouts so they all cook to the same doneness. Small ones get burned and large ones don't cook enough. I try to use only the large ones cut in half, or only small ones left whole.

Ingredients

* 2 pounds brussels sprouts, washed and trimmed, large sprouts halved
* 1 head garlic, cleaned
* half stick of butter
* Kosher salt
* Freshly ground black pepper

Directions

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

Put Brussels sprouts, whole garlic cloves, and butter together in a bowl. Toss to combine, and season with the salt and pepper, to taste.

Empty the bowl onto a shallow baking pan and roast until tender and edges just start to brown, about 35 minutes.

I only like Brussel Sprouts two ways - Cooked & Raw :D

If you like cheese, try a bit of freshly shredded sharp Cheddar on them.

SWMBO and I had beer-battered Cod, homemade Mac&Cheese, steamed Brussel Spouts and Pickled Beets for supper last night. :)

No, there isn't any left,
John

I can relate, I guess, since I love venison and know folks that don't because they've never had it fixed right . . . . and I fall into that category on the sprouts, I guess, since to me they are vile and noxious weeds :D

I envy you guys. I can't eat 'em. If I do, I spend the next few hours sounding like I'm testing my Evinrude.
Hell that's half the fun of eatin' em! Brussells Sprouts are one of those foods that you wither hate or love-kinda like liver.
I'm in the "love" category for both.

My name is Jim... I am a "sprouter"... I knew from past experience I would OD on a bunch o sprouts and FUAS. So I took a few every other day, for a while. After 6-8 mos. I can pound down spinach, and sprouts without passin.....out. In the process I lost 30lbs some where. Must be the addiction.

I have always hated brussel sprouts, and wondered why some folks like 'em. Then about 20 years ago I read a newspaper article which said to 40% of the population brussel sprouts taste bitter and to the remainder they don't.

They taste bitter to me. I assume to you guys that love 'em they don't, right?

Fresh ones don't taste bitter - it's the frozen or over-cooked ones that usually do. The fresh actually taste "slightly" on the sweet side.
The full stem in the pics will make a veggy side-dish that will make at least three meals. They last quite a while in the frig.

Even though my garden totally fried in the sun last summer, the sprouts were great later on. I plan on growing more this year without all that fertilizer which is actually what burnt things to a crisp. I have eaten sprouts all my life and I like them raw the best. My grandaughters and I like to hit the garden and graze. B sprouts, peas, 'maters and last year we had eaten all the peas by the time they were done. Oh well, can't wait for the new growing season.
Peace,
gordon

Well that is interesting about fresh ones not tasting bitter. My momma used to make us eat those frozen ones, and I have assiduouly avoided 'em in adulthood. I'll try some fresh next time I get a chance. Like Lee, tho, I have never seen the sprouts on the stem like that before...

Fresh from the garden veggies are waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay better than most store bought.

I can't believe nobody has said anything about eating them steamed with butter --AND VINEGAR--!
Vinegar really wakes them up.
BTW-the stalks they grow on,, are almost indestructible.
We have a big bon fire after the garden is done every year.
Limbs that have fallen , straw from the garden, and some seasoned wood, and the sprout stalks.Next morning we have a big pile of ashes ,,,,,and charred SPROUT STALKS!
