Square butt/round butt?

I have two 1920's Smith M&P's one in 32-20 and the other 38Spl.
They have been noted in these forums as "My Twins" as they are virtually the same piece but for the caliber.
I am reading my newly acquired Standard catalog, I have to note that the 38 Spl, in this vintage with a square butt is the exception rather than the rule. (fourth change, close as I can figure)
This has not been my experience. I have seen far more of these with the square butt than the rounded.
Can somebody fill me in? What was the standard of the time?
The book also notes a substantial increase in value for the square model, which matters not to me. I am finished selling guns. Have regretted it every time, but my curiosity is getting the better of me.

Different note, took my new K38 Target Masterpiece to the range yesterday. What a nice piece. It will shoot way better than the man behind it.

You are correct.
There was a list of "corrections" to the SCSW 3d. Ed. a few years back. Round butt is the exception; square butt is the rule.

Unfortunate, but that error has been cited many times here. For the first five years of existence, the K-frame revolvers had only round butts (with one exception, in 1904), and thereafter, through WWI, both round and square butts were common. After WWI, most had square butts.

That's what I thought. I have seen way more with the square butt. Love them either way!
