I used to go quite often but I haven't been in years . I enjoyed the cool fall mornings sitting in the Pennsylvania woods waiting for one of our resident Gray squirrels to show up . The fall colors and the solitude was very relaxing.
I'm thinking I may go again this season .
Any others here enjoy hunting squirrels ?

Oh man. I grew up tagging along with dad in the squirrel woods from age 3&4. I love it and still do. In NY it opens Sept 1. Archery opens Oct 1. So I get a few weeks. I always intend to go after deer season but usually don’t. My dad used to use his model 12 early on and once the leaves were down he’d use his .22 I do the same thing. Although I really like stalking them with my .410 Encore 14”.

I used to hunt squirrels many eons ago. I gave it up because I grew tired of eating hairy meat. Never could clean one without coating it in hair.

Hunted “ tree rats” back in the 60’s with friends on our farm. They lived in town and used shotguns, I used a Win. mdl 74 22 which I gave my son. Last year found another 74 refinished stock and reblued trigger guard and its good to go. Need a scope mount and scope.

I hunted squirrels for years, loved sitting out in the woods enjoying nature, didn't really matter if I got any squirrels or not. I never ate one, always gave them away. I haven't hunted them in years, need to get back out there again now that I am retired. I have 2 mounted squirrels hanging in my gun room. My grand daughter asked me how I got them, I told her I shot them while hunting, she told me she thought that was mean.

I suppose squirrel hunting was the first type of hunting I did, and it will probably be my last. When I lived up in Spotsylvania, all I had to do was walk out back of the hog pen, and I was hunting. I really didn't care if I killed anything or not, so I developed what I called, "Catch and Release" squirrel hunting. I'd get the little tree rat lined up in the scope, and then think "BANG...gotcha" lower the rifle, and keep watching the woods.

Of course, from time to time, my wife would want a couple to make a stew.

The rifle is a Ruger 77/22, with a 3X7 Simmons scope. I honestly don't think I ever missed one with it.

I'd always go squirrel hunting with my dad when I was around 10 or 11. He bought me a Remington single shot 20 gauge.

He would always skin them, soak them in salt water overnight, and my grand ma would fry them up for breakfast.

They were alright with some gravy and biscuits, but I liked bacon or sausage best.

At a much younger age I did a little squirrel hunting, but didn’t feel right about killing the little critters. Still have a family of squirrels that live in a large Oak in my back yard. I feed and water them. They don’t bother me, I don’t bother them.

When my sons wre still at home, we went together many, many times! Was a special time in my life shared with them! We hardly missed a chance to go! Over the years living kinda got in the way & the together trips beame less frequent as they went about their lives. One became an avid hunter, trapshooter & my range companion still. The other moved on to another state, but still shoots trap, hikes & bikes! The times we spent together in the woods are irreplacable memories for me & I am sure helped them to become the men they are today!

I started going squirrel hunting with my day when I was about 5 or 6. I was the vine/sapling shaker to get the squirrels to move to his side of the tree. Got my own shotgun when I was nine (stevens 94 in 20 gauge). I've hunted them for the past 58 years. Wifes medical issues kept me out of the woods last year but I'll be out enjoying the hunt and tranquility of the forest soon.

The wonderful old days. Many years ago, I hunted squirrels. I've been thinking about going again. Hunting is fun, easy, and minimal effort.
