Squirrrels and food

Squirrels is good and good for ya. We hunt them early before deer season opens with shorguns and then in late january & February with scoped 22's. We also have a spring season but I've not hunted that one-too busy fishing. I like squirrel better than rabbit. Somther those little buggers and make a big pot of white beans and rice......wonder what de rich folks is eatin' :D

I just finished up squirrel season in january. Seemed to be a very high population everywhere I hunted. I think most folks don't small game in my area anymore. Several big red's make a proper family meal. Fried like chicken served with mashed taters, gravy and warm bisquets!

Every day is open season at my house. They eat all the bird seed and tear up the attic of my shop so they get dropped as soon as they appear.

Squirrels

I am surprised at the response to the post. It is neat.

I never had a bb gun past the Red Ryder. I would guess that the Sheridan would be a near ideal tool for the harvest.

I still use 'the original' squirrel rifle, just for the fun of it. A Remington model 33. The color of the metal and the wood pretty well matches.

I seldom kill a really high animal, but a few squirrels last a long time if you rarely kill one.

The country squirrels are more wary, and much harder to hunt/shoot than the city squirrels. I skinned many when I was younger. These days I do not eat squirrel or opossum, but would if I had to.

Squirrel hunting was like grocery shopping for me as a kid. Before I got my .22 my sister and I would throw rocks till they came down the tree at which time my dog would catch them for us. My wife makes home made egg noodles and I cook them in a crock pot all day. Tastes great and very tender as well. This is making me hungry...... Gordon

My wife's grandmother made squirrel and dumplings. One of her grandsons would usually bring a whole mess of them over two or three times a year. If you cleaned them, she'd cook 'em! Good eats!

I live in the country surrounded by oak trees and I popped three in the head last year from my kitchen window using a Gamo pellet air rifle w/scope. Made some good stew, except for all the stray hairs.

"Fun or food in the last five years"? In that time frame I've only shot a couple that were determined to take up residence in my house. That was before the big black dog came to live with us. :D
But as a teenager, I had a hard time waiting till fall to get after those bushy tailed limb rats, early morning before school and after school. My gun of choice was a scoped Mossberg semi automatic or Winchester 69A. Nothing better than fried limb rat, mashed taters and gravy. I always tried for ribcage shots as I did like the brains. Tails got hung from the handlebars of my bicycle.:D

In the past 5 years I'd bet I've taken over 200 squirrels. I would rather hunt squirrels than most any other game, lots more challenging too. Anybody can sit on a deer stand and shoot a deer, but taking a limit of squirrels in one morning takes some real hunting.

Every year me and 3 co-workers go to Florida and kill 200-300 over a weekend, which is alot of fun, but the down side is cleaning them

I have oak trees, so I have squirrels, and I have more than one pellet gun. And we have gumbo.
Every since it cost me $1300 for a wiring harness on my new car, all the kids in my neighborhood enjoy training with my pellet guns.

my wonderful wife sat out a bird feeder because she really enjoyed watching the birds. she would often cull the herd of blue jays that ran off her cardnals with a old bb gun without a rear site. she was haveing trouble with this one squerril that just would not stay away from the feeder. she would take a shot and fuss because she would missed. it was comical to see her run across the kitchen to get this bb gun, fling the door open and stare that little big eyed beast down. empty the one load and start fussing about that vial creature getting away again. while i was at home one day by myself i saw her nemisis eating out of the bird feeder. don't know why i had the deer rifle out but pulled it to my shoulder looked through the scope and what did i see. this same ole stupid squirell with bald spots on his head and body where my sure shot wife had hit him many times with a bb gun with no rear sights. i couldn't bring my self to shot him with a 270 or the neighbers house. i don't really know what happened to that pitiful thing probably died of old age or a heart attack.

i live in southwestern virginia and have been eating strange things my whole life. recently i started cooking squirrel legs like little buffalo wings and it was a hit. I suggest anyone to try this out you will be surprised. i like the old school legs and squirrel gravy but sometimes you get bored and try out new things. thank goodness they have four edible legs. :D

Texas Star,
The CZ is a GREAT squirrel gun. Been using a 453 (same gun but with a set trigger) for 3 years now. I have to say, the squirrels don't have a chance!

Squirrel hunting is one of the most relaxing and pleasant fall woods experiences. It always brings back the kid in me. A good 22 handgun (scoped S&W Model 48 or a scoped Ruger MKII target competition), or your favorite tackdriver .22, either a new one, high grade one or one you've had for 40+ years is all it takes. I like to add 4 or 5 with a chicken, onions, tomatoes, potatoes, lima beans, white and yellow corn, and a few blackeyed peas for making up a big pot of traditional North Carolina style brunswick stew. Mmmmm.

I've been a squirrel hunter since my early teens. I'm 56 now, and I still really enjoy hunting them. My preferred arm is a good scope sighted .22 rifle. My current squirrel rig is a Kimber Hunter with a Burris 3x9 compact scope. I also enjoy eating squirrels.
