Anybody have any experience with StackOn Gun Safes? My colletin is growing, so I was thinking of purchasing their 14 gun fire resistant model. I can get it for ~ $400, but didn't know if I needed to spend more to get a reliable one.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

You can probably find some old threads that give a ton of info on safes...it's a fairly common topic.

I have an old Stack-on set from Wal-Mart bought back in the 90's (a tall one for rifles, and a smaller one to "stack-on" top for handguns - they are like their current "locking gun cabinet" but my tall one has two locks on it, not just one). I use them for mags and ammo at this point.

When I did actually used them for guns, I knew they really only kept out small children and would have looked awkward if a meth head was trying to walk off with them (I kept a 100 lbs of steel weights in the bottom of it).

My advice is: Expect to pay what 2 or 3 of your best guns cost, if you really want a decent safe. When I stepped up and bought my current safe in 2003, I actually sold two of my prized N-frames to help defer some of the cost.

Hope this helps.

Unless I'm missing something, the only Stack-On stuff I've seen is basically a glorified gym locker. I might store some ammo or something similar. I wouldn't feel secure with any important documents or belongings and especially not fire arms in one.

I know there are pretty good safe sales out there to be had all the time. I would suggest you keep looking.

I have a Stack -On 36 gun safe, made in 2010. Was sitting in storage and I got a good deal (new locks + delivered) so I took it. The lock stopped working about a year after purchase and Kaba-Mas, the manufacturer, replaced it at no cost.

It's an affordable safe but not my first choice if I had a bigger budget available.

Keep looking for a better quality safe. And buy as big as you can afford it.

I really like the new Browning Black Label - US37.

Black Label - US37, Black Label Tactical Series Gun Safe, Browning Gun Safe Product

Or the Barrett safe.

Barrett Rifles - BARRETT SAFE sold by AMSEC 951-685-9680

Or Ft. Knox.... the list goes on and on...

Kozmic, that's what I thought at first too, but apparently they do make actual "safes" now.

You guys must have gone to some low rent gyms. I have an older model with 6 locking lugs and feel pretty good about it. Yes you can put thousands into a safe and feel really good but as we all know if a pro hits you, the safe is going to be empty. If you have a surveillance cam or house alarm and live in a normal area, I think you have a very good chance of keeping your stuff.

If you've got a basement and 8 gorilla friends, that don't talk, to help you hump the ultimate safe downstairs then go for it. I use to work for an ATM manufacturer and we would always get surveillance pictures of 'bubba's truck' draggin an ATM down the road. Given enough time and tools you can open those things up like any safe.

Comes down to type and location of your home and the $$ you have available.

Well there going to work hard at taking mine out, it weights close to 1500 dry and is installed in a tight space ( very little room to use forcing tools) and the back and bottom is well lagged down to reinforced concrete. I use to make my living putting in pumps, boilers, compressors, sterilizers and I guarantee it’s well bolted down.

Give me big and heavy any time for safes.

I have a Stack On 24" wide bolted in the corner of a closet for my overflow. I also have a good security system. Even my good Browning safe won't keep out a professional thief with a 24V metal grinder.

Give me an hour and I'll have it empty and be out the door. Good 6" grinders and some .045 slitter disks and it wouldn't have a door very long. The facts of life form a metal worker.

Ha, If you tried a grinder or torch on mine, they would be scrapping you off the walls and floor with a putty knife :D

I saw a safe at Bass Pro several years ago. It was a 1000$ safe with a 2000$ full-length painting of John Wayne on the door.

Please take some professional advice.

Save your money and buy any number of well made safes. Not something you can find at Walmart or similar.

Cannon, Liberty, Amsec, Fort Knox, are just a few.

Stay away from electronic locks. Contrary to popular belief, safes are not meant for quick access. They are for storage.

American made safes that use electronic locks which are made in China. They don't last near as long as a traditional dial type safe locks.

Have it delivered and installed by a professional.

People can nay say all they want. I do this stuff for a living. To make a long story short, I have helped more pissed of safe owners who couldn't get their guns out of their cheap safe than I care to remember.

So....... Save your money and buy smart. It's an investment. Buy bigger than you think you need. Have it delivered and installed. ;)

I had a pair like MP1983. Then I bought the bigger 14 gun model and all 3 are full. Locks keep honest people honest. That is about all. Two are bolted together, all are lagged to the floor and wall studs.

I am a metal worker too. You can't slice concrete as easy or fast as steel. Its even harder to do both. We do use a lancing tool like seen on TV. It will burn through the side of a safe, but if there are stocks and bonds in there, they will be toast.

Stack on Safes

These safes are really not much better than gym lockers. They can be pried open with a large screw driver. Save your money until you have enough to buy a real safe.

I use Stack-On. I'm poor and can never fill it up anyway. In any case, a locking cabinet is light years ahead of scattered gun cases and closets.
