Stainless 29-2?

I am looking at an auction where they are offering a stainless 29-2 in 4". Can that be right or is it just a 29-2 with the blueing removed? It is pinned and recessed with the yolk marked 29-2. It looks like a real 629 revolver but these days, who knows. The serial number is N372004.

Pretty hard to tell without pictures……
More than likely a hard chrome finish.

No such thing as a stainless steel Model 29. Stainless S&W N-frame .44 Magnums are the Model 629. A "stainless" Model 29 is one that is either in the white (blued finish removed), nickel plated, or hard chrome plated. Hard chrome on a firearm does look like stainless steel.

I saw that one too and at first was sure it was stainless but like everything indicates I'm sure it is hard chrome or otherwise re-finished.

Several Hard Chrome and hard chrome like finishes are on the market and when properly done ... look just like Stainless steel .
I believe the 29 - 2 was manufactuted brfore S&W made any N - Frame revolvers in Stainless Steel ... some one look this up , I'm away from my reference books .

Back in the day, hard chrome was popular with some hard use folks. If one spent a lot of time outside (LE duty weapon, hiker, etc.) it was functional.

I have noticed a lot of dealers were mistake nickel for stainless, and hard chrome for stainless. It happens fairly often.

If you want to be certain, you can call the factory and hope they can tell you how it shipped by the serial number.

Actually you are NOT looking at a stainless model 29, not with that mid 70's serial number.. The 629 was introduced about 1980 with no dash, and pinned and recessed cylinder, don't hold me to the intro date of 1980, that is why I added the or so, so you are likely looking at nickel or hard chrome, still a nice gun if the price is right... just make sure you have that 3 day inspection period, send it back if it doesn't suit. billy

Almost certainly not. The ridiculous answers that come out of S&W employees today are sad.

To get the sort of information sought here, it would be much better to reach out to the S&W Historical Foundation. They have the records.

Thank you! I, too, was under the impression that if it wasn’t made during the last 2-4 weeks, the company representative had no idea if they even made it.

The Historian retired and they have not seen fit to hire a new one.

You could try to stick a magnet to it.

(I say that only somewhat in jest. If it’s marked 29-2, it’s is most likely plated in some way.)

Magnets will stick to the stainless steel alloy that S&W uses.

If it is marked 29-2 I can garwontee you it is not stainless. All stainless are model 629.

Everyone with a FFL is a firearms dealer but sadly, the FFL does not come with firearm knowledge. There are no stainless 29-2’s. As noted, hard chrome and such similar finishes became popular in the 70’s and many guns were so finished.
