Could also have been a model 29 in nickel. I don’t believe there was ever a stainless version of the 29. As mentioned above that would be a 629
If the frame is stamped as a model 29 in the yoke cut (any engineering changed level), it's almost certainly an aftermarket finish. We receive inquiries like this on a regular basis and some owners get adamant and insist that their gun is a prototype or one-off. You can spend $75 $100 and get a factory letter, but I assure you it won’t come back as stainless steel.
Robar, Metalife, Metaloy and Armaloy have been popular for a long time. These finishes offer excellent corrosion and wear resistance and look just like stainless.

The Model 629 is stainless, but the Model 29 is carbon steel, usually blued, but also available with a brightly polished nickel plated finish. If a Model 29 has a satin or matte finish that looks like stainless, it's either one of the aftermarket nickel finishes like NP3 or hard chrome.

Yes, factory nickel finish does add value, somewhere in the 10-20% range. Look for the letter "N" stamped into the back of the cylinder and a large letter "N" stamped into the lower left side of the grip frame. This was a way S&W marked cylinders and frames for a nickel plate finish.
