I've got the opportunity to grab a no-dash 66. I already have two, but this one's recessed. That's my rationalization, anyhow.

Anyhow, the rear sight is black, while other specimens I've seen have the stainless rear sight. Could the owner have changed it out, or did S&W make the change at some point on the no-dash models?

Hi,
I have the no dash 66 and it has stainless front and rear sight...as far as i know yours did too, and someone who actually wanted to see the sights has simply changed out the rear blade .. mine is recessed too, and its an amazing revolver... i love it, i just need to get a blued rear blade :-)and see abpot getting a partridged front sight ....i use this revolver for target shooting here in Australia.
As soon as i saw it, i knew i wanted one :-)

The early 66 no dash came standard with the SST rear sight asembly. It was later changed to the blue variety. Either can be correct just depends on when your revolver was manufactured.

Can you still buy stainless rear sight blades for a 66 or would it have to be an old stock part? I have a no dash with a stainless rear sight and I'd like to put in a blued blade, but I'd still like the option to put it back to original configuration. I suppose I'd need the screw too.

If I remember correctly the stainless steel sight indicated it needed a gas ring modification as part of a recall, and when the design change was made they went to a black sight. I can't seem to find the info right now.

What does it have for a front sight? If it has a red (or orange) ramp front sight, the rear sight was most likely blued when it left S&W. If it has no ramp, the rear sight should have been stainless.

I'm not familiar with any recall (but that was 35 yrs ago) but, the blued rear sights did appear at pretty much the same time they moved the gas ring to the yoke.
