I just happened to notice an "A" laser engraved on the inside of the top strap on a 686 I have. Looked at some other guns and one of the 629's and 627's has the same marking. 617's other 686, 629, and others do not have the mark. I did some looking on google and search in the forum and couldn't find anything. Its not a big deal, Im just curious as to what its for if anything. All of my smith revolvers are pretty new. Purchased within the last 4-5 years.

In a state like California, guns have to be subjected to a drop test (I think Maryland also) and those guns have to have an "A" or a "B" stamp. To differ from the other models sold to the rest of the states.

Sorry to resurrect. If my 500 has an A under the top strap, does that mean it was actually dropped onto a solid surface, stamped, then sent off to consumer? I paid $200 under its price and it was bought new, but the cylinder came with an ugly dent.

Drop testing such a heavy revolver just seems rather dumb.

California does not test individual guns. Manufacturers have to submit samples to be tested and pay for the "privilege".

Don't think for a second their "roster" has anything to do with safety. It's all about limiting the guns that can be sold by dealers or imported and a blatant infringement of the 2nd Amendment.

And years ago when the drop tests started every gun submitted passed the test, even the Raven's, Jenning's, et al. So much for unsafe guns.
