Query -

I have an elderly cousin who has been collecting stamps since he was a child. As you might expect, the collection is extensive.

My question is, how does one go about liquidating a stamp collection?

I figure someone on this Forum knows!!!

Thanks.

It depends entirely on your location. We used to have a store front business in town that specialized in stamp collecting. It has since closed, I am sure that if you do a bit of snooping around via stationary outfits you may find someone who knows what to do. My dad had an older friend of his lay a large extensive stamp collection on him. Dad went to Seattle near where he lived and found that stamp collections are basically no worth what anyone thinks they are. The truly valuable stamps are those from Ben Franklin's era, beyond that forget about it. Penny collections do not fare much better, there are only a few pennies in a complete collection that have much value, for the most part they are worth about as much as copper scrap...that is a bit of an overstatement but knowing a friend with three complete penny collections gives me some understanding. The friend was very disappointed when he learned the value of a "complete" penny collection, but not nearly as disappointed as his son was. They walked in with visions of new Corvette and walked out Cushman.

Sorry to tell you but, whole sheets of post WWII are worth more as postage. When sold for cash only 10 to 15 cent on the dollar.

I go along with kinman, I collect navy postal covers and many of the stamp dealers I deal with use the old stamps, back to WW2 vintage to mail my packages. So if unused they are worth about their face value

I feel your pain!
I have Uncirculated Coin Sets which are worth less than I paid.
Should have pulled more Silver Dollars out of circulation!

Same principal as to why I am liquidating my Gun collection so my children won't have to deal with it. I still have my Penny books, and may look at selling off for maybe a nice dinner with my wife.
