Stars who served

Jonathan Winters spent a couple years in the Pacific as a Marine during WW2.

I had no idea Captain Kangaroo was a Marine.

I cracked up on the Steve McQueen commentary.

I just about keeled over at the end where it listed "others who served" but weren't in the main presentation. James Doohan was listed there. But Bea Arthur? USMC? Are you kidding me? BEA ARTHUR???

One of my favorites was Sargeant First Class Sabu Dastigir. He was known as "Sabu the Elephant Boy" in the movies. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps and was a gunner aboard B-24s in the 370th Bomb Squadron. He was a ball-turret gunner and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross.

Bea Arthur, born Bernice Frankel served for two and a half years and was one of the first women volunteers. She rose to the rank of staff sergeant; strangely, she later denied ever having served despite a FOIA release of her records that verify her service.

Bill Blass, later to achieve fame as a mens clothing designer, served in the US Army during WWII in a unit that provided battlefield deception services.

Does being in the Army Reserve count? Alan Alda was there 1956-58

Bob Feller, baseball player first man in line at his local recruiting center Dec 8, 1941. Served in combat on USS Alabama. He is the only Chief Petty Officer in the Baseball Hall of Fame.

At Chiller Theatre her in NJ I have twice met and shook hands with Ernestine Borgnine, he served in the Navy for 10 years, and also met Navy veteran Milton Supman, AKA Soupy Sales. Also met Marine veteran
Tony Curtis, who was in Tokyo Bay on September 2, 1945.

That is correct about Tony Curtis being a Navy veteran. The photograph I purchased from him showed him portraying a Marine.

Jimmy Stewart flew missions over Germany in a B-17. He apparently never grandstanded or took advantage of his status as a Hollywood star during his service. According to Stephen Ambrose's books he had to stay on base during his tenure in England, due to his being mobbed with fans if he went out. The books also said that if his wing flew, he did, too, and was known as a solid pilot.
