So an odd thing happened when shopping around and considering buying a 500 s&w mag. I decided they are too big and heavy for what i want and the ammo is crazy expensive unless you reload which i do not. I decided to buy a 44 magnum instead. With that said i already have a 3" 629-6 Talo edition but i want one with a longer barrel. So im looking at getting the 629 Classic Delux 6.5" barrel. I think it will be a perfect handgun for deer hunting.

So i then started thinking after i decided to buy the 629 Classic to look into all the 44 mags Smith is making right now. The other that caught my eye is the blued model 29 6.5 barrel. Yes the new make and model of the "Dirty harry". Id love to have it. Probably more then likely just use it as a range gun since for hunting id be worried about messing up the blue finish.

I love revolvers in general and own different calibers already including my main hunting revolver my Ruger 454 Casual Bisley.
But theres just something about the .44 mag. The History and story behind it and how amazing for the money the round performs still in this day in age of big bores. I mean you can order a shipment online of 200 count of 44 mag for $103 shipped. And a 44 mag will take down all the same animals a 500 s&w and 454 Casull will in North America for a lot cheaper.

So with all that said i decided to start a .44 mag collection. Not really for collectors value. But more of the latest brand new models for actual field use but still resemble the past History. I really like the quality of the New factory guns and how well and precise they are machined. And some of the new performance center models are amazing although i like the look of the Classic style better.

So this 44 mag collection im about to start i think will be a cool sub Collection of the Revolvers i already own. What do you guys think??

Do it ! And acquire a copy of 'Standard Catalog of S&W 4th Edition' to drive you crazy.
I've had 7 varieties of the M29/M629,currently down to one,the M69. Love shooting full bore 44 Mag loads.

You have a good start to your collection I think the 44 mag is the best all around handgun ever made from the 2 1/2" snub nose to the long barrel hunting guns is the only revolver I will buy anymore
And I also love my 44 mag Desert Eagle its a great shooter

It's a disease!!!!

I've just been infected by this bug too. I just started the collection with the 4" 629 V-Comp. .38/.357 is nice, but nothing else feels like a S&W .44 Magnum.

Next will be a 5" Classic DX or a 4" vintage Mountain Gun.

My wife is giving me "that look" again. It will be a while before the next acquisition, but even she sees the magic.

Lol... Magic or sickness? I really like that 4" 629 V-comp. That's on my list as well. Man getting bit by this bug isnt going to be cheep!! Lol

For general field use and hunting, a 629 with 6.5" barrel would be hard to beat.
The SS makes for a better field gun in my opinion.

I would also suggest watching for a 629-3, 629-4, or 629-5 model.
These are all pre-lock.

You can find them in excellent condition, and sometimes NIB.
They're worth the wait and the search.
My 2 cents.

Good luck! :)

I'll add that my Smith 44 mags were very accurate and surprisingly flat shooting out to ~100 yards with full power 240 gr loads, making it an excellent hunting pistol. I used to amaze friends (and myself) putting 6 of 6 in a paper plate using a standing, two-hand hold, at 100 yards. Be sure to use ear protection and you will love it.

I have 3 , S&W 44 magnums , 2--4" and one 6.5" . One of the 4" is a 629-4 . It has the endurance pkg , no key lock or mim parts . I routinely take the other 4" , a 29-10 to the range and put 150-200 rounds through it . I changed out the grips to an old set of PC Magna's I had . On this forum I bought a real nice left handed holster , fits perfectly . Full magnum loads aren't uncomfortable to me with this set up and I don't use a shooting glove . It just takes a bit of getting used to .
I hope you enjoy your 44's as much as I do mine .

Great, after you have 1 of each S&W, you can start adding Ruger Super Blackhawk's,RedHawk's, Dan Wesson's, Colt Anaconda's etc etc....you have so many options!

I think that I should have picked 44 mag instead of 357 mag, there are a lot fewer 44 mag revolvers. Enjoy!

The 44 magnum is my favorite cartridge for both shooting and hand loading. I only own three of them but the have provided me and my family many hours of enjoyment at the range.

It's nice to hear from someone who appreciates the currently available S&W guns.

I'm glad we aren't all old curmudgeons who won't own anything made after 1980.

I think you should collect whatever you're interested in. Have fun and best wishes.

Great idea, but I wouldn't rule out .44 special revolvers. I have a Lew Horton 24-3 3" that is a great revolver to have. I have 2 629s now. A 3" Talo and a 6.5". Both are great shooters but I use .44 sp in them mist of the time.

The 6.5" model 629 is a very good deer handgun.
Don't forget to add a few model 69 smiths to your .44 mag collection.
