Next door neighbor had there house broken into yesterday. Three hand guns stolen out of their closet . I don't know what make or model of the guns .I don't understand why people spend so much on guns then don't have a gun safe . This makes 4 guns stolen from him in 2 years . 1st one was out of his truck overnight in the drive way . Handguns could at lease be kept in small safe .

Part of being a responsible gun owner is taking measures to insure they don't fall into the wrong hands. It sounds like your neighbor isn't too bright...

Some people...

...shouldn't own guns or power tools. ;D

That said,

I am sorry to hear of the neighbor's misfortune. Given the time and tools, quite a few gunsafes can be defeated without much skill involved.

Roundabout way to say, it could happen to a lot of us, too.

Biggest threat to the security of one's property is the number of people who know what one has, and how it's stored. I very rarely do any show and tell with firearms, outside of the internet.

He and the police should look close to the home. Someone who knows him, his schedule, and where he keeps his guns would be very suspect. I know I sound harsh but I speak from experience. A couple years ago my step-son stole my credit cards and racked up quite a bill. He just about ruined me and his mother. He is now a 2 time convicted felon. If anyone thinks I'm cold and cruel to prosecute him, this was not the first time he stole from us (we still don't know the full extent of all he stole). While his thefts may not be family it could be someone in the neighborhood.

he should get a safe yea they can get them if the want them but at least try to keep them from geting them

I agree with 2hawk. Your heighbor got hit once and the creep scored. I wouldn't be surprised if it was the same creep who did the second theft. I think any of our forum mebers who are LEOs can testify that bad guys are creatures of habit. If they are successful a first time at a given place they're very likely to try again at that same place. If your neighbor gets an insurance settlement for the loss you might find a way to very strongly suggest to him that he get a safe. Because I'll bet you a dime to a dollar that the creep will be back for another try after he thinks the insurance company has paid off.

Excuse my ignorance, but are there any penalties for a private gun owner if their gun is lost/stolen? If I lose a gun I get suspended for 30 days, a year of probation and a career dead-ending blot on my record. As a result I am hyper, ultra careful about securing my guns.

I'm not huge on infringing on gun owners' rights, but maybe there should be some type of penalty if your gun grows feet and you were blatantly negligent. A lot of guns used in crimes are stolen, cracking down on irresponsible gun owners would probably curb some of that.

AFAIK, in California there's no penalty for someone else's actions, like the theft of your property.

That said, I believe the authorities need a report as soon as you are aware of a firearm theft, this absolves you of liabilities should it be used in a crime and remove you from a potential suspect list.

Guns are property and if the owner does not want them stolen they should keep them secured. Guns stored in the closet of a locked house is as secure as the vast majority of them will be stored. There is no way that I would want laws passed requiring safes or other restrictions on firearms storage. How could you defend your home if there were laws requiring all firearms to be locked up in your home? You can't legislate common sense.

Everyone who has guns and they're unattended (no matter where they are) should make a good attempt to secure the said weapon from unauthorized use. Cause you could be very well shot by your own weapon.

Do not be a dummy if your a gun owner....please.

Uh... in my house or my truck is "secured".... if a punk breaks in how is that my fault? Ya aren't allowed to set traps for em. The "hero's" are supposed to solve the crimes and protect us so if a thief steals from me

Why not "crack down" and punish the whole LE community for not doing their job- maybe THAT is something we need to consider :p

maybe that would slow some of that down too :p

You as LE should be held to a higher standard for one and I would imagine that if you loose the department or diuty gun ya will have issues not a privately owned one.

I have and use a gun safe etc but as far as I am concerned my locked house is secure and no one is supposed to be in it but me. Why on earth should a homeowner be further penalized by law for what a thief does?

If you are so paranoid about your loosing a gun and getting punished maybe you need a new job?

plenty of items around the home that aren't usually locked up are deadly... gas, paint, poisons, shovels, axes, knives and on and on and on

Do us all a favor and just stay an officer and don't get into management or politics we have enough problems without your "help"

Tallpaul you definatly have a good point there. There are all sorts of other weapons in and around the home that aren't locked up. Also I don not believe in punishment if you were robbed.

A good lesson for everyone. Long gone are the days where your home was your "safe place". And you could run to the store and leave the doors unlocked. It's a shame we have to go to such lengths to protect what is ours in our own home. As for MTS Cop's post about laws for lax gun owners, while I agree that we have the responsibility and duty to keep our guns safe and secure, passing laws on how we should do that, in our own homes, would be a huge victory for the gun control nuts. What's next? Mandatory home inspections to make sure we are following those laws? The man may not have shown good judgement, but to suggest a law that would punish him, is a huge threat to our 2nd A rights. Just my 2 cents.

Can't stand thieves of any kind. Whether I leave a kids bike in the driveway, an unlocked car, or whatever. It's not yours, stay away from it. I know it's wishful thinking that that version of America would return.
But what I would like to see is a return to letting the punishment fit the crime. First offence lose a hand. Second, you obviously didn't learn, lose your head.
That probably the only thing the mid-easterners got right.

You regularly hear the same BS from the BGs. 'If he didn't want me to shoot him, he should have turned loose of the wallet'.

For that other thought about charging the victim, he's already been violated once. No need to follow the liberal view of siding with the perpetrator instead of the victim.

Not your fault. That being said, firearms can't be stolen from my truck in the driveway overnight because I don't leave them there. Amazingly enough.... I've never had a firearm stolen from my truck parked in the driveway overnight. ;)

I see this different than a lot of others, and yes I have even been ripped off by my ex-wife. On another burglary I still belive by a young man I had befriended and gave jobs to, but cant prove it.
I see it like this: If I leave my garage door up, the house unlocked, and my vehicles unlocked, (although I dont), it doesnt excuse a thief in my eyes or view, a bit! If caught I belive in THEORY they should be shot on the spot the first time!
No, if I catch a person looting my house I am not going to shoot them if I dont have to defend myself in act. That is only because I am not going to lose money defending myself in court, not that they dont deserve to shake hands with the devil.
I dont belive a person is going to change once they cross that line the 1st time!

I don't some law to tell me how to store my guns , but living in the city , home burglaries happen several times a day every day no matter where you live . You just hope & pray your never a victim . I just think extra precaution helps ,may not stop them . Maybe slow them down little bit.
