I’ve built several nice rifles using the JC Higgins Mausers that Sears sold, M50 and 54 I believe. They were made by FN and other than an oddball trigger in which part of it was pinned to the bottom metal and a plain stock with no checkering or figure they were just as good as a regular FN. some of them were fitted with chrome lined barrels by High Standard.
I paid $125 for a JC Penney “Foremost” Mauser in 270 wand fixed it up for my sister-in-law for a Christmas present one year. It was a commercial action with a side safety and a very 1960’s shaped stock. But it was a well built rifle that I cleaned up, refinished the stock that the original finish was peeling off of, mounted a decent used scope I had lying around and gave to her so she could start hunting. After a trip or two to the range to practice she killed a very nice bull caribou with one well placed shot at around 200 yards.
