I know they make storage boxes to hold extra magazines but does anyone have a simple homemade option that would work for the same purpose?

The box the gun came in?
Go to the Dollar Store and find some plastic containers with lids that fit your size of magazine?

Whenever I buy a new bottom feeder I go to Midway and order magazine pouches and eventually enough magazines as needed to fill them. Everything is sorted by individual gun and stored next to the appropriate semi rack in the safe (is my OCD showing yet?). That all makes loading up a range bag a quick, simple, and neat process.

I don't use the straps with the Midway double stack pouches, they just get in the way, clutter things up, and without the strap they tuck in tight spaces or in my bag quite nicely. The California Competition Works .22LR pouches are a little more expensive, but along with the .22LR they also hold my 380 single stack mags.

Good Suggestions

These are some very good suggestions. I appreciate it. If anyone has more to add, please do so. Thanks.

Ammo cans, shoe boxes, wooden wine boxes.....I don't need anything fancy. I have a habit of buying at least 7 magazines for each semi-auto (6 to carry, one for the gun). Just a habit I got into.

Clear plastic shoe boxes with snap on lids. I separate by brand and/or caliber, depending on how many I have of each, and write what's in there with a marker on the side so I can tell what I'm grabbing from the stack.

I use the large size, Infinite Divider Box from The Container store. Sometimes going shopping with your wife pays off. As soon as I saw it, I knew exactly what it would be perfect for. They stack well and you can quickly find the mags you're looking for through the clear plastic. They've proven to be quite durable too. I'm on my 3rd box!

I use a small Eddie Bauer bag for my 1911 magazines ( I have 70+).

I store magazines for other pistols on a shelf in the safe.

I’m not fussy enough to think I need a fancy container.

I guess I'm awfully curious how much these cost... these are EXACTLY what I'm buying at Wal-Mart, typically Plano brand or whatever generic is copying the Plano brand. The movable dividers they give you will be roughly five times the number you actually need and will use, perhaps more than 5x.

The genius here over ammo cans or shoe boxes or ______ is that these are configurable, they are transparent so you can see what you are looking for and you can label the ends.

I can't imagine that there is a better way to store magazines if you own a few dozen pistol magazines or more.

Ummm, fussy?!

I kicked magazines out of my gun safe for the same reason that I kicked ammo, gun boxes and eventually all rifles and shotguns out of my gun safe -- real estate. More shelves for more pistol racks for more handguns. When I consider what the safe provides for me, it sure seems like a lousy idea to consider shopping for a second safe (and everything that goes with adding a safe) when I could simply wise up with regards to how I am using the great safe that I have.

I stored holsters, magazines, and etc., in large plastic containers or duffel bags under the bed in the guest bedroom. They take up too much room anywhere else and are only useful for the limited time I am going to use them. Then I kick them back under the bed. :)

Looks like this works well....

I think this type of divided container would work great. I will check both The Container Store and Walmart to see what is available. It has to work better than what I have now, which is a drawer full of zip-lock bags with mags stuffed in them.

Mags that are loaded and ready to go are on magnet strips. Loaded rifle mags and empty pistol mags are in ammo cans, labeled and stacked. Speed loaders in trays made for them by safariland. (I had to make one for n-frame loaders).
Fancy guns in their factory boxes wrapped in vci paper.
Not-so-fancy guns in “the best pistol racks you will ever own” sold on this forum. The magnets can be had from harbor freight for $7 each and I added a little painter’s tape to protect the bluing on some of the magazines.

If you want to go with the plastic organizers, Bass Pro Shops has their store brand organizers (made by Plano) half price with free shipping over $50.

FWIW there is a local guy who goes to all the gun shows and sells magazines exclusively - calls his business "the clip guy" or "the clip man" or some such.

Anyway, he keeps all his inventory in boxes just like these. Puts P-Touch labels on the lids to mark which mags are in which slot. Seems to work out REALLY well for him.

I've been using magnetic tool holders on the inside of the door of my safe, but I may buy a couple of these containers myself.

Lots of great ideas. I have seen the Clip Guy at our local show and his clear storage boxes work very nicely. I bet the pouches from Midway could be easily attached to the inner wall or door of a gunsafe to save space.

Squidsix, what is the model on the far right in image 2? It sure looks interesting!
