Strain screw length

Since I dont have a K frame square butt laying around at the moment, i got to consult the blue forum.

Is the length of the strain screw from a n frame squarebutt the same length as one from a k frame squarebutt?

If you are missing the strain screw, you can make one from a grade 8 (hard) 8-32 cap screw. I generally use 1/2 in length and grind to suit me when setting up a revolver for competition.

I believe I read somewhere that the K, L and N Frames all use the same grip frame (I know the K & L is identical but until then did not think the N frame was the same).

I have used 8-32 X 1/2" UNF (I think it is fine thread) cap screws in a couple of 686's and a 629 with great results. Even screwing them down below where the original screw sat saw minimal if no trigger pull weight increase.

Interestingly my (04) '42 commercial Victory has a different strain screw thread and the 8-32 will not fit.

My American National Screw Threads Chart lists 8-32 as NC and 8-36 as NF. I have an 8-36 tap in the set, but can't recall ever using it for anything.

Smith & Wesson K, L, and N frame square-butt revolvers that use the flat-leaf type mainspring. Measures .605" OAL and .480" under the head. Fits models: 64 ,65, 66, 67, 610, 617, 624, 625, 629, 648, 657, 681, 686, and maybe more.
