Strange Things Found In The Woods

Have you boys seen the various Govt Survey Markers, like Geodetic Survey? Me too!
Have see them all over the US back to when I was a kid.
But I saw one SE of here in the Manzano Mountains different from all the rest.
It's an older National Land Office Marker and it's in the National Forest.
And it's located at a corner of 4 Townships. That's a 6x6 mile square.
I was walking up a nearby trail when I see this stone pyramid.
So I walk over to check it out.
It's about 6 feet tall, about 3 feet at the base.
Built of small local stones about fist size cemented together.
And it's got that brass marker on the top.

You mean this thing here? Found this in the Mark Twain forrest.

This building could be the last of many, up in the green mountains in vt there's a few still standing buildings like yours. The old town was called bagelyville. The buildings that are left are falling down now. There was a hermit who lived in that area who fought in the war. He was tired of war and people so he moved up in the mountains. My uncles would bring him there clothes and some food during hunting season.

I have heard of these in several places, but have only seen them in Nevada.
No, this no Hogan or other Native American related!

Canoeing the Potomac River about 150 miles above DC I pulled to the bank to answer natures call. Dug a small hole and found a Remoil bottle. Good shape, no cracks or chips. blue tint to the glass. It cleaned up nicely. One of my prized possessions.

Discovered this tree in our woods, and one day, with binoculars, witnessed how it was shredded.

I've posted this picture before. (hint: it was a "bird" thread) Can you guess what animal did this?

This was on top of one of the tallest hills just before you get into the San Juan mountains near durango. Saw it while elk hunting. The land owners said they didn't know what it was but it's been there as long as anyone could remember.

This one is an old cistern that I uncovered while dozing a road on our farm. I plan on digging out the bottom and look for old bottles soon

dave holl,we "had" a tree in our back yard torn up like you show.In fact I watched the crazy Pileated Woodpecker destroy the tree!

Walking back after a fruitless day of hunting at dusk I noticed in a tree that there was a cross made from twigs like in the movie The Blair Witch Project. I got out of there fast!

I once bought 42 acres and a cabin south of Rolla, MO. On it was a long depression. The previous owner said it was a wagon road between two nearby towns. I always wanted to use a metal detector on it but got divorced and sold it before I could.

Woodpecker is what I think. I have seen them strip bark off of a tree to get to insects.

Congratulations to Milton and REM3200 for identifying the woodpecker tree. Yes, it was a pileated.
