Anyone else hooked on military strategy computer and board games? I confess to countless hours lost to Chess, Stratego, Panzer Leader, Panzer General, Civilization, Medievil Total War, Master of Orion II, Galactic Civilization, Richtofen's War, Kingmaker, 30 Year/s War, Bar Lev and numerous others.

I enjoy a good game of chess when I can, but my wife thinks it is "unkind" that the only way to win is to "kill" the opponent's king. So I learned her game, Stratego. In 36 1/2 years of marriage I have yet to beat her! ##@*^# stupid game! it still hacks me off. Ivan

Ever hear of "The Morrow Project"?
The_Morrow_Project
It's a role playing game a bunch of us in the university science fiction club came up with as our answer to D&D. I did a lot of the technology side and science "balonium", and was a member of the original MARS 1 team.

The game also found its way into US armed services as a training tool, and from what I hear, is still being used. Some of the technology "brainstorming", much of which didn't end up in the published game, did eventually end up as actual hardware.

Best strategy games ever!

The game that I played from a very young age and spent many hours playing was Civ 2, the best, most informative, challenging and fun game ever! Then came the next generation, Shogun total war, Rome total war, then the next, next gen, Rome 2, Shogun 2, excellent strategy games. As far as more recent combat strategy games Company of Heroes are quality games, as are the Men of War series.
As far as board games go...yes of course Chess, Shogun and even battleships count. However NO BOARD GAME, and I shout because I emphatically believe this, NO BOARD GAME matches Risk for strategy. I remember when I was about 12 years old, my Uncle (a WW2 collector) had us sat around his dining room table, Each wearing the hat of the nation we were representing, He was in a German army service cap, my cousin was Russian in a ushanka, my other cousin in a US service cap and myself wearing a Japanese cap with Havelock (of course we all wanted to be the UK so he said none of us could). Great memories. Ha ha it said on the side of the box "games that bring people together"...yeah in disagreements and violence, haha. Risk the best board game ever.

for awhile, i played an online game called Oil Empires. it is a war strategy game where you build an oil empire and a military to defend it. eventually, to survive, you should join a cartel. I had gotten so "addicted" to it that i would only get 2 or 3 hours of sleep a day...i had to quit...i haven't played it in about 5 years.

I'd be afraid to total up the hours I've spent on those kind of games.

When I had readily available gaming partners, we'd play a massive board game called World in Flames. Playing one evening and one weekend day per week, that game could take the better part of six months to complete.

On the computer, if you liked Panzer General, then you'll like Panzer Corps. The big campaigns in Panzer Corps are very similar to Panzer General. I'm not thrilled with those, so I'm doing the individual Grand Campaigns. Hearts of Iron II with the Armageddon expansion is a good strategic level game.

The other one that sucks up my time is Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion. You have to go through Steam to get this one.

As far as actual board games, I like go. Haven't played it in years. Arabica coffee house on the east side of Cleveland (Coventry) used to have lots of people play there, and sold go sets as well. They closed years ago.

I still play Age of Rifles from time to time. I just got it installed on my Win7 machine and my Ubuntu laptop, both under DOSBox. It's a really good traditional wargame translated for the computer. It depicts ground combat in the age of muskets/blackpowder rifles. There are a ton of scenarios ranging from the Napoleonic era to WWI. Plus lots of people have written their own scenarios for it. It's "orphan-ware" now so it can be downloaded from a number of places. I bought several copies at Walmart years ago for around $5.00 a piece.

I love battleship. My LGS now has targets that you can use to play the game. Shoot the dots on each ship and sink it before your opponent. Almost as much fun as shooting bowling pins.

Somewhat. All I have are (Computer) Sid Meiers Civil War-which has three battles on it: Gettysburg, and two others. I always would be in "command" of Lee's Army. I beat the Yankess forcing them all to surrender at Gettysburg. I never tried the other two battles but aybe once or twice--wasnt as fun. I think one of them is: South Mountain?? cant remember the other.

Talonsoft's Eastern Front. Excellent game for all things Eastern front. I tried Stalingrad once--too darn long.

Age of Empires II--Ive bested all scenarios and won most of the campaigns. A couple of the campaigns are boring so--never finished them.

While looking for something else-I recently stumbled onto a game I didnt know I had--and probably bought about 3-4 years ago--called: Grand Ages of Rome. I want to try that one out.

A few I would like to have--would involve: Knights, Samurai, Napoleanic War stuff, and some from the Revolutionary War. I dont have any fitting those ages.

I HAD, some of the board games like: Richthoffens War, and a couple others. I never had any of the better ones like: Squad Leader and Panzer General. However, played squad leader a few times and always beat the Russians resoundly--and I have never had experiance playing the game before.

If your talking about Statego? it's easy to win. I always planted my bombs where the other person never suspected-always killing his best guys in the process. I would then go in with what I needed and would wipe the board clean.

Years ago, I did spend a great deal of time doing so...nowadays, too little time, unfortunately. One of these days, when I retire, I'm going to learn all of the rules to Advanced Squad Leader (if my eyes can still read the tiny print by then).

Age of Rifles sounds like oe I would love having. If you ever want to sell a copy? please let me know.

Like I said, it's now "orphan-ware/abandon-ware". Do a Google search and you should find places to download it for free, as well as extra scenarios/campaigns.

You will probably need to download and install DOSBox to run it. With a little reading, that's not terribly hard, even under Linux.

As far as strategy games for the PC the you really cannot best the Total war series of games, Rome, Shogun 2 and Rome 2 are the three that I play regularly. Highly recommended, easy to play difficult to master :)

The Harpoon series is one of my all time favorites.

My son and I like Flames of War and Wings of Glory both board type games

Im always on the look out for more good ones. Is there any out there that take place during King Lonidas's time and especially during Thermopalae?

I had all the Squad Leader games and supplemental scenarios, I realized that I would never be able to play it again (no time no opponents) and eBayed the whole collection for $110.

ive been playing chess for over 55 years, its enjoyable and a lifetime learning experience.
