i was asked for more information about the pistol that has a stuck slide...

it is a, 9 mm , model 5906, s@w ,4 inch barrel, stainless steel finish...

the magazine is also stuck...

the slide is about three fourths of an inch away from the hammer, and the hammer will move if i press down on the sear release lever...

the tiny firing pin saftey lever blocks the slide from going back toward the hammer and i do not know what is keeping the slide from moving forward? it can not be seen , at least by mean, but i am not a gunsmith

I've been reading your other thread & this one too..
I can only first speculate that the magazine disconector/ejector is now under the slide & the magazine is in place this will not allow the slide to move back forward
I would try an push the magazine up into the mag well while pressing the magazine release button, You don't want to damage the ejector though.. You need to get the magazine out of the pistol..
I wonder why you can't depress the other two small levers to get the slide to move back but the magazine may be limiting the slides movement..
ALSO as 500 Magnum Nut asked, "Is The Gun Loaded??"
I would first try an get the magazine out, even if I had to depress the small detent & unthread the magazine button nut some or completely & then strike the tip with a nylon or hard plastic hammer or drift.. This will then allow the ejector/magazine disconect to drop down & the problem may then be "Healed"..

Here's a Video that shows how to field strip the slide for a 4506 but everthing is very similar, In the 2nd video he shows how to dismantle the frame & this may help you with trying to disassemble the magazine button..

might try removing the mag floor plate and spring. Releasing the spring tention on the follower might just release the slide. Otherwise, if the follower will drop out, you may be able to see up inside and see what is wrong.

That's a great Idea Skeeterbait.. Very Good..
I'd guess the magazine has the ejector/magazine disconect wedged against the slide & is holding it from moving..
Might even be able to just smack the mag release button in with a shot hammer.. I would do as skeeter suggested & try & dismantle the magazine first, You may damage the mag release or the magazine by pounding on it..

I suppose this is the way we find out about these No-Nos

How did you get the slide past the ejector with the magazine in place?? Or did you slip the magazine in afterwards?
GOOD LUCK!!
Gary

stuck slide

thank you guys for the information :)

the pistol is not loaded

the video was fantastic on youtube

i was reassembling the 9mm when all the problems started...after the slide got stuck i put the magazine in thinking it may loosen the slide some way...i will try to get the magazine out first..the grips are off

headknocker, skeet and 500 thank you much for your time and info. will post what happened, have calling hours tonight, will work on it friday

are you in South Texas????

I can help if you are.

could your recoil spring have slipped off the mark and bound the slide???

is your slide lock lever pin up against the correct portion of the barrel lug?

can you install pics so we can give a better guess?

your recoil spring is off the frame and is angled down.

your mag appears to be pushing the back of the slide up.

take a rubber mallet, squeeze the back of the slide down and tap the back of the slide.

you can mask the back of the slide with masking tape to help protect the finish.

your slide will not go back with recoil spring angled down. you are going to have to get rough with the mag to get it out. if its bound on the mag release, you may have to take apart and tap the assembly out.

1/16" punch and depress the spring loaded detent and spin the button counter clockwise. you might want to put the works in a large ziploc baggie should the spring and detent go flying.

it does look like your mag button is depressed slightly. someone mentioned tapping on the button. protect with a rag or tape and tap lightly to see if it will release the mag.

if you were closer, I would do this for you.

I agree, time for a mallet attack.

Tap the rear of the slide, while pressing on the mag release. Remember the gun is steel and not made of glass.

Time to get rough with it..
Do exactly in the opposite of what caused the problem..
Remove the magazine & tap the slide forward gently, also as said in a pevious post pushing down on the slide may help some..
It does look like the mag catch isn't fully seated so just a smack with a rubber mallet or shot hammer on the mag catch button should release the magazine..
The recoil spring & guide have slipped out of thier cutout & that was the original problem before the mag was put in place..
Good luck!!
There's nothing wrong with the pistol..

stuck slide is fixed! thanks!

SWCQB45 , headknocker and magnum...you guys are brilliant...my purple heart friend, Carl , who served courageously in Vietnam helped me ...he held the magazine button down and a small screwdriver on the side of the mag, i tapped the screwdriver with a small hammer and the mag flew out...then i used a larger hammer and hit the end of the slide and it flew out with many other parts...should have listened more carefully to SWCQB45...anyway...the problem is solved ..thanks again guys !!! God bless you...

YAAA HOOOOO!

I have been brought several like this and the recoil spring falling off the mark is always the culprit.

When that happens, its......

ATTAWAY CQB!
Sometimes the mere threat of a fiber or phenolic hammer is enough to make them break down?
Good On Ya'!

Sw cqb 45 is correct with the cause.

But sometimes the hammer isn't necessary. If you can fit a finger between the frame and the front of the slide and squeeze the recoil spring guide up to the slide it removes enough pressure to allow the slide forward movement. Squeeze it like you holding onto a golf club. Applying the squeezing pressure to the slide and the recoil spring guide rod. That works 75% of the time. But sometimes the brass hammer is the only way. If it ain't broke-fix it 'till it is!!!:D
At least you had the b...I mean nerve to ask for help. I usually spend days trying to figure it out cause I ain't gonna let anyone know that I'm less than perfect when it comes to guns ;)

I just want to say great thread, my SW was stuck without the mag in it. Without using a hammer I used my fingers to pull the recoil spring towards the front of the gun to clear the slide. Thx so much.:)

Researching and finding older threads are very useful , my 5906 was doing the same. I soaked the Mag release with oil and flushed out a bunch of brown crud. Just so happens have a set Spanner Tips and adjusted the release with a 1/2 to 3/4 turn to the left. Will try it out at the Range this week and hopefully fixed the problem
