Stumbled on a SR1911 (pics)...

So went to the LGS (also a range) the other day and started browsing around as usual. There it was...the elusive Ruger SR1911 - first one I had seen in person - they had just one and after handling it some, I made my first "impulse" gun purchase. Now a only few weeks back bought a Colt 1911 and figured that I could break the news gently of another gun purchase to my wife - maybe over a week or so or maybe I'd forget to mention it - what's the harm. Walked into the house - busted - forgot that I had set up e-mail alerts on our credit card. Good thing she's good natured!

Here's some pics - haven't had a chance to shoot it yet, but I'm pretty impressed with the feel & fit/finish at the price ($650) - I thought you guys/gals might be interested because of the previous threads here:

I've seen a couple - the first one flew out of the store (I urged the guy to buy it) at $699, the second sat in the case at full MSRP of $799. They appear pretty well put-together.

I reply only to compliment your fine photos, though - wow!

I think Ruger hit this one out of the park.

The short guide rod, the internal extractor. The tiny warning printed on the underside. I like! And NO FRONT SERRATIONS! YAY!

That is one handsome pistol. I'm jealous. We won't be seeing those in The People's Republik.

I just got back from Sportmens Whorehouse where I was looking for the new Ruger. They didn't have any in but they've been told retail will be $649. They did have one of the Remington R1s which is priced at $629. The finish on the R1 is some kind of spray coat, the grip safety not beaver and the sights are high profile. The sales guys think the Ruger will blow the R1 out of the market. Plus Remington has egg all over it by offering a pistol that had problems.

I have to admit, that looks really nice. I'm a fan of Ruger revolvers but not so much a fan of their semi-auto's. Please do let us know how the first range trip goes.

Is the mainspring housing steel, or plastic? Nice looking pistol you have there.

loutent, can I ask you about the cutouts on the beavertail...what is your impression of them? Do you even notice them when griping the gun?

I don't think anybody can make a good one at that price. At best they will be hit or miss. I no longer subscribe to that philosophy when buying handguns.

I've shot both the Ruger 1911 and the Springfield Range Officer the same day and compared them side by side. I was impressed by both. I'm torn, the Ruger is stainless, and very well finished, but has fixed sights. The Range Officer has good Bomar type adjustable sights. They both shot great. I "think" I would choose the Ruger, but the Range Officer comes a very close second in that price range.

Thanks for all the pic compliments - I'll be shooting it next week - the range had only limited availability the last few days because of de-leading and I wasn't able to get a lane.

To confirm - the mainspring housing is metal (attracts a magnet). Right now I don't have an opinion about beavertail cutouts other than I don't really notice any difference in feel vs. my Colt & SA but I'll report back when I shoot it.

The fit and finish are really impressive to me - I like the beaded finish and the grips are first rate. I'll put 100-200 rounds through it to see how it "runs" and if it shoots where I point it
