Substitute suggestions for H110

Funny, knowing the consistency of powders like H110 and AA#9, it's hard for me to imagine it not metering well in a measure. Those powders are about the best I have used in terms of metering in my Hornady measure.

I use H110 and have come to really like AA#9 in my magnums. But, AA#9 is very similar to H110 in consistency so that won't help with your issue.

My brother just began using 4227 for his upper midrange 41mag target loads with Berry's plated boolits and he loves it. Only negatives and they are minor is he has noticed powder flakes left in the barrel and chambers and the stuff has a strong bitter smell to it. Not a big deal really because it shoots well. I tried those rounds myself and shot well with them.

Oh, my charger drops H110 very accurately. Rarely is it even off by 0.1 grain. The problem is that after a dozen or so throws the small grains gets between the plastic moving parts and soon gets to the point where the handle can't be moved up and down. I dont even have to peck on the case with H110.

With Titegroup I have to peck on the case once or twice to get consistent throws. With Trail Boss 3 or 4 times. Mike

What other powder would be close to equivalent but not so fine grained.

I've never used it, but the burn rate charts put Hodgdon's Lil Gun very close to H110 and I've seen it in the stores recently.

As close as it gets.....

You give up very little when using 2400 over H110/Win296. In fact, some weight bullets in certain calibers are equal or a little faster than the hottest combination.

Revolver max. for 2400 w/ a 140 grain bullet is 16.5 gr. I'll check out 'rifle' loads in my old Speer #9 manual and see if they are **tter

I'll check Speer #9 for rifle loads.

14.7 grains of 2400 is max for a 158 gr. soft point.

Did you tells what bullet you were using??

I have some SR4759 that can be used as pistol powder though it was designed for low velocity rifle loads. I think that the IMR 4227 is a good suggestion and it may even be available.:D

Not sure if it's been said or not. But I love unique for my light loadsnin 44 mag. I shoot a lot of 300gr out of my Redhawks with it. As far as magnums. I only run rl2400. I've shot it with Missouri smasher 240gr bullets with awesome success
