I was glad to see Road Rat finally use the correct terminology, "flat sap". I have one of the L models. Don't really remember where I got it, but carried it in my briefcase for years. Never had to use it on anyone, but I was once issued a patrol car that had a defective left headlight. It was always going out. I found that if I reached out with my sap and whacked it on top of the fender the light would come on. Hey it worked til we got the thing fixed.

Oddest thing I remember seeing, back in the day, The Broward County, FLA Sheriff Deputies were trained in the use of and issued Nunchucks. Sure looked strange seeing a uniformed officer carrying a set of those on his duty belt in a pouch specifically designed for that purpose. Geez, can you imagine the liability potential there?!

Nice to know that I have a defensive weapon in my hand when reading at night. And they are great and very flexible.

I bet you could make them of high-temperature silicone rubber molded around the weights for use around the kitchen. Might be good for other things besides holding your cookbooks open.

My College Professor was a Jersey Cop in the 60s (went into Teaching when the Leap grants first started) he started a lecture one day crying about how the rules had changed in favor or the criminals. He tossed his gloves onto his desk with a loud thud. Pulled out his handkerchief and dropped it with a thud. He was even wearing his old Police Hat. He removed it and laid it down also with a thud. Then he pulled out his IronClaw, knuckles and told his stick would have drawn too much attention.

Sap gloves, roll of coins in the handkerchief, steel washer sewed into the top of his hat. Oh I wish I could have seen him work. He was a boxer as well. Can you imagine getting g hit in the face by Boxer wearing sap gloves?

Don't forget the old tried and true "soap in a sock"

Slapstick

I joined the Police Dept. in Miami, FL in 1960, we referred to
them as slapsticks and the long, narrow verticle pocket on the right side of our uniform pants as the " Slap Stick pocket ", it
could be brought into action very quickly from that position.

Most officers, myself included preferred the flat Slap Stick over
a round black Jack because the black Jack invariably burst the
skin everytime it was applied to the head, whereas the flat of
the Slap Stick might not break the skin, thereby, saving making
out an incident report.

Many items we used in the 60's have been outlawed as too
inhumane, such as the "Iron Claw" which I used with great
success.

Did not get to have one when I was a Deputy Sheriff. Our department issued PR-24s. You beat yourself up while trying to learn how to use it. We did not have mace or oc then,early 80s.

Like all the back in the day cop stories-cops with nunchucks would have to have seen that. I had a college roommate that had a S&W slap jack and he left it on his coffee table, invariably someone would pick it up and slap the palm of their hand with it usually way too hard-like swelling and instant bruising! I can't imagine how bad that would hurt against your skull...

Totally legit. They were en-vogue in the mid-to-late 80's when I went through the Broward Academy. They really stood out, because most carried versions with brown, stained wood, probably cocobolo. This contrasted against the Sheriff's white-shirt, forest green pants, uniform.
For a while, MoNadNock even made a set, which was simply a standard plastic nightstick, cut-in-half, and properly corded, LOL. Needless to say, they were quite short-lived, as the ASP batons hit the LE community by storm.
