Super rare 629

[ACE10000D]

Got lucky today and picked up this factory engraved 3” with power port 629-3 Mag Comp Performance Center. Right side stamp says Tactical Competition Special Edition, and this is number 22 of 25. Came in the blue Performance Center case. Looks to be unfired also. I believe it to be a special run of Product Code 170012. The Smith bible calls it a Carry Comp, but I found one online with a label that says Mag Comp. Anybody else seen one or got any more info?

Beautiful 629........what timing.

The 640 I posted earlier has the same markings.
Performance Center logo and the "Tactical Competition".
Does your 44 have a number on the bottom on the trigger guard ?
My 640 has the number 2 stamped.
So far, I have found little to no info other that they were out of the Performance Center.

Two things that really jump out to me is the lack of an adjustable rear sight on a 629, and the significant bevel on the front of the cylinder. An extremely interesting revolver!

I have another 629 just like it without the engraving, also have one of the 2-1/2" Camfour 629's. Those are all fixed site models.

Very nice, I've never seen one, didn't know they existed, especially in a non-adjustable sight configuration.

Congratulations! Your new gun is incredible. I have the more plain Jane variation.

My interest was piqued around a decade back or so when a member here showcased a blued 3” fixed sight N frame .44. A one of a kind.
Someone shared that these PC guns were the next best thing.

Of course there are the camfours too.

It took me a while to assemble the set. I realize that they made another Carry Comp with the interlock, but that one did not interest me. It was the strange way they made the shroud cover on that one that turned me off to it.

If I have my history correct there were 428 of the Lew Horton Carry Comps (also called Mag Comp) produced in two "runs." Each were given special serial number prefixes. There were 300 each of the Camfour 629-5 and 629-6 produced.

I don't know how many of the Horton guns were engraved but the number has to be in the "rare" range.

I still have the N I B 629 mag comp 2 it’s got the adj rear sight. 1 or 100 most went to Germany. Was tuned when new by Jimmy Rae of s& w performance center.

Very nice 629-3, and unusual! I've never seen one stamped as "Tactical Competition Special Edition", or as part of a special run of 25 revolvers. What is the info on the blue box label? Perhaps if you posted the s/n it would help. The SCSW 5th Ed. lists Performance Center PC 170012 as the M-629 3" Mag. Comp. (Pg 552), but also as the Model 629-3: Carry Comp Stainless (Pg 527), the 3" Carry Comp 1992 and the Carry Comp II 1993 (Pg 531). There are no references to any 3" engraved models for the PC or Lew Horton, or for those special edition Tactical Competition models. It's a mystery...and I'm not sure that a S&W letter would shed any more light. Good luck!

I looks like the S&W logo was over stamped.
