Suppressor - Outback II or Tac 65 ?

One of the reasons I bought the S&W was the threaded barrel. I have all the legally necessary paperwork, but I've never owned a suppressor before. There are two that I am strongly considering the Gemtech Outback II and the Tactical Innovations Tac 65.
I know they are close in size and most reviews have them close in overall db reduction. The Outback is sealed where the Tac65 can be disassembled for cleaning.
So my question is which do I get for my 15-22 ?
I appreciate any feedback from those that have experience with these items.
Thanks

dont have a suppressor yet but i order a griffin checkmate stainless spent alot of time looking at all the options but take aprt cans are the only way to go with how dirty 22s are i would have bought the tactical inovations can but the griffin lets me also use it on my 17hmr

silencer talk is a good place to get alot of free info on differnt 22 cans silencerreasearch has a few free reviews but charge $30 for thier priemium reviews but the do have a test of like 20 differnt 22 cans

the silencerco sparrow and aac prodigy are 2 of the top choices out there but also are more pricey

havve shot a ruger mk2 pistol with a tac65 and it sound pretty quite to me

Cans are like cars, if I own a mustang its because I think mustangs arfe the best I can afford.. I don't own a mustang I've owned several mustangs but at the moment I'm content with my c5 vette right now... with that said most reputable manuf. make good cans and unless you have 2 of them you will never know which is quieter... I work for a weapons manuf. and I've "test fired" many different cans and my only advise is to not get a 22 cal. can... buy a bigger caliber.. if that is the only gun you want suppressed than intregally suppress it but if you buy a can then you can put on several guns ganted you didn't buy a 22 can... I like the Yhm phantom 556 or 762 because of the QD option and it makes it very easy to clean after use on a rimfiire

Hope this helps

I have a YHM Phantom in 7.62 and use it on many guns. I have the QD on several 5.56 and it works great. You can not beat the price. I got mine for $550 (+$200fee). It is bigger and heavier than any 22 or 556 can but I can use it on my 308 f-class rifle which is the one I wanted it for.

and anything smaller than the .308... here is a man using his head... $750 spent and several host guns to stick it on...

I have a Tac65 sitting at my local dealer waiting on my stamp to come back. I have never had a silencer but had the opportunity to hear both the cans you are asking about before making my decision. My local dealer stocks both cans and shot them both on a Marlin bolt action with subsonic ammo and they were both stupid quiet, as in Hollywood quiet. The only thing I really heard was the hammer dropping on the bolt and the bullet hitting the target (coffee can) downrange about 25 yrds. I have had pellet rifles that were MUCH louder than either of those setups.

As for the difference between the two, not much by my ears. More of a different tone than different volume levels. Like I said either will be very quiet. Expect your 15-22 to be slightly louder because of the semi auto action cycling and I wont always be using subsonic ammo.

I disagree with whoever said don't get a .22 can. It is by far the cheapest way way to get into the NFA game, my total costs were $475.00 including stamp. If you have multiple hosts (I have three) then you can justify the cost pretty easy. I have also been told not to shoot the dirty .22 ammo through a sealed can of larger caliber due to fouling. I've also been told that there is a bigger quality difference between different priced cans of larger calibers. In other words most .22 cans are going to give you very close to movie level suppression. However a cheap 5.56 can and a more expensive one, can have more variance.

In the end I chose the Tac65 because you can take it apart and it was in stock at my local dealer. Remember this, the aftermarket value of a used can is next to nothing and you never get your stamp money back, so you are pretty much married to the can forever. Make a wise choice and consider it a life long investment. Currently I'm saving up for an AAC M4-2000 for my 5.56 AR's.

When I got my can I went with the TI Quest, if you are going to get a can for life why not get a SS can that you can clean and not have to worry about wearing out. Yes I spent a little more up front but will never have to worry about what cleaners I am using to clean it or ever have to send it in for cleaning.

I like the idea of SS for longevity. I know it's stronger and can take higher pressures than aluminum. I was told SS cans are able to hold up under full auto fire - correct me if this is incorrect.
If I go with a larger caliber so the it fits on multiple firearms, does it reduce the effectiveness on the smaller .22 caliber or is it still just as quiet as a dedicated 22 can ?

no not at all.. atleast not enough that anyones ear can tell .... when you go to a larger cal. it has more volume(space) so its a trade off.. 22 cans are light and small which works well if you wanna install them on a small 22 pistol.. but a 308 can will be just as quiet if not quieter just because of the volume of space in it... the only downside to a larger cal. can is the size and weight.. ss doesnt mean its full auto rated.. the material the baffels themselves are made from and their thickness determines their rating.. ive heard 308 cans that were way quieter than 22 cans on the same 22 pistol..
the advantages of a larger can or atleast a 556 can is that it can be used on anything below the .223... .22lr, .22mag, 17hmr, 17machII, ar-15, just to name a few.. im still waiting on my paperwork at well over 2.5 months.. i gettin a .223 and a ..30 cal. to add to my personal collection... the 223 is 6.5 inches long so it will work well on pistols and rimfires along with a few varmint guns and ars, and th .30 cal. at 9.5 will be used on everything that own 30 cal and smaller.... hope this aids in your search

nfatracker.com is a great place to get an idea of the time line your looking at. and you can see what alot of other people have choicen to purchase maybe some ops you didnt know you had

Is there a can that would be suitable for 7.62, 5.56 and .22?

I'm an AK guy, but have an AR I am finishing up..

I'd like to be able to use the can on multiple weapons..

Yhm phantom 30 cal or 7.62 what ever they call it now.. you can get it and buy the qds with the ak thread and the ar thread in them and leave them on the weapons so you can bounce it around.... if I remember right the ak is a 14x 1.0mm left handed and of coarse the ar is 1/2-28 assuming ints a 223 and not an ar-10... the phantom will work on the ar-10 also but it will be a 5/8-24 or a 9/16-24 thread depending on who made it

Yhm isn't the only 1 that makes something like this but I've made a full auto phantom glow many times to the point that the barrel gave up and never hurt the phantom.. good company and good servise

Pretty nice unit, just out of my league in cost. $700 + $200 stamp.. I guess I'll just stick with something like a Tac65 and run it between several .22's..

look at it like this if you buy the tac65 you will have close to 500 in it and a days worth of running around getting papers signed and fingerprints done.. and im sure after you have it you will wish you had one that fit and ar-15 or what ever is shooting tht day.. i figure mine up by how many doner guns i could use it on a phantom 7.62 will cost me about 30 dollars a gun if i thread no more... id atleast look at the phantom 556.. cost is in the middle and you can use it on 22 mags and 17hmrs 223 and thats just a few ops

There's been a lot of good discussion and points made, but I think I'll have to go with one of the dedicated .22 suppressors for now. I'm not opposed to buying another later. to get one that is rated for full auto, or for larger calibers would be nice, but their size and weight would make them cumbersome on the 15-22 and the Walther P 22. I will be opting for a serviceable one (Gemtech now has one) and most possibly one that's SS. I'll just get a separate suppressor for the larger calibers where the weight won't make much difference. This one will be just for the S&W and the Walther.
Thanks again for all the input.

Makes sense. If you're going to regularly use it a lot on your 15-22 then hanging an 8 inch + two pound 7.62 Phantom boat anchor off the end of the barrel is a bit much.
