Surprisingly good sandwich on the road

IMHO, the best Monte Cristo in the Las Vegas area is at "The Cracked Egg" on Green Valley Dr., Henderson (just north of I-215. ......Delicious....... Big Cholla

In your view, when restaurants still knew how to make a Monte Cristo, how were they prepared?

This is NOT, repeat NOT my idea of a Monte Cristo.

"""The "bread" of the sandwich is basically two pieces of French Toast, covered in powdered sugar, and the usual issue is that it's soggy and smushed. It's been over-soaked in the egg/milk mixture and not cooked correctly."""

I am used to this kind:

Open faced white or rye bread, ham on first, then red ripe tomato, next bacon, then Swiss cheese on top then under the lower broiler for a minute to melt and blend all together. Try that one, they are delicious. I start with a very hot pan, put a little butter on the bottom of the bread first and it will toast on the bottom while under the broiler.:D

My job used to bring me down to Texas a couple times per month - I would usually base myself in Jasper and travel north and south from there to other locations. At the end of the week it was back to Houston to fly out. However, to make the drive back from Jasper more interesting, I would often bounce north to enjoy the drive along Lake Sam Rayburn, then drop back south to Woodville on Hwy 69 to rejoin 190 West. On the way to Woodville, at a small town called Colmesneil, lies the Texas Star Cafe. Great burgers with fresh ingredients, BUT, surprisingly, as good a Reuben as I have ever had in my life....

Traditionally, it is dipped in its entirety in egg ( French Toast Batter) and quickly deep fried ..:D

But there are MANY variations..:D

LOOK AT THAT THING!! ^

Gentlemen, I have never had, or even seen, a Monte Cristo. So intrigued, I will embark on the quest to learn- and achieve- the Monte Cristo Sandwich. The Croque Monsieur looks like a killer sandwich too.

Man I love this forum.

There is a chain restaurant called "Cheddars" in the South. Seems like I have seen their stores around Austin as well. They have a pretty good Monte Cristo on the menu. It looks like the one in ditrina's post.

Absolutely no one knows how to make a good Monte Cristo anymore. It's a lost art in restaurants now.

Bennegans and Cheddars both made great Monte Cristos. Most of the Bennegans chain stores closed--I CANT fathom why??? because all their food was excellent even on their worst day. Anyway, Cheddars is a chain whose food is the closest yet-to Bennegans food. If you have a Cheddars anywhere near you? give their version a shot--well worth it.

FWIW, I feel it's worth rewarding places that do an outstanding job with a review telling about it on TripAdvisor or Yelp. Do consider it. :)

Ours here is called: Urban Spoon. I have a few posted on it. :-))

Cheddars serves a great Monte Cristo. They are between Red Lobster and Golden Corral Restaurants on S.P.I.D.

I love being surprised.....

I love being surprised like that. I was in my Grandparents small town and there was a place that was literally a 'hole in the wall'. They had a porthole door in the side of a brick building. You'd put you order in and a few minutes later a hand would stick out the hole with your order. Just like you, I wasn't expecting much, so I ordered a generic 'ham sandwich' figuring nobody could mess that up much. When the sandwich popped out the hole it was a slab of steaming ham with the ham and the trimmings hanging off the sides of the bread. Best dang ham sandwich I ever had!:D
