Friday night my youngest daughter texted me and said, "Me and hubby going shooting tomorrow, wanna go?" Well heck yeah.
So I get up extra early Saturday morning, get to the gym at 5:45 and get in my workout. Come back home around 7:00, made us breakfast and helped Mrs. Chop finish cleaning the house. Intended to do the yard work right afterwards but the dew was still heavy around 8 am, so decided to put that off till Sunday. Contact the kid to say I'm ready.
"We're cleaning our house and then headed to the gym cuz we thought you were doing the yard first." Well dang it OK call me. Mrs. Chop wants to go too (since we're not doing the yard), OK love it, it'll be a family outing so I used that time to load the range bag and get stuff together for two shooters instead of one. I'm taking an old duty weapon S&W 5946 and a Del-Ton AR in 5.56, Mrs Chop is taking her old duty weapon Sig P229 in .40 cal. and her 9 mm Shield.
Around 12:00, the kid texts OK done, meet us at the restaurant next to Sportsman Warehouse, we'll buy ya lunch. OK, free meal can't argue that much except by now I've already had a ham sammich and chips. Now the range we're going to is a police range an hours drive away, and we still have to stop off at SW to get targets (can't use the PD's targets, have to supply your own. Fair enough). Get to the restaurant, all I wanted was some fries and a lemonade, they don't have either. OK, a salad and a water then. The kids hadn't eaten yet so they're full on hungry, by now it's going on 2:00 pm and not a round fired. Starting to cloud over like it's gonna rain...great.
Finally clear the restaurant, go next door to SW, all I need are some targets, the kids have to buy targets, ammo, ears, staples for the staple gun, get to the checkout and son-in-law had left his wallet in the car. Now they're fussin at at each other cuz she had to pay instead of him. Come on already!!
Get out of the store, he has to stop at the PD to get the key to the range (he's a cop and is able to use the range anytime), finally get on down the road and get to the range just before 3:00. He's brought three AR's all built by him, 2 in 5.56 and the other in .300 Blackout. Get everything set up, everyone's kitted out and loaded, post up targets, no wait, we didn't bring .380 ammo for the kids pistol, so she's gonna shoot just her AR. (Another fussin ensues over the ammo)
OK, we all get on line and the fun commences. No wait, his second round on the .300, he's jammed. OK, get that tended to, here we go. No wait, 3 rounds later, he's jammed again this time the case is stuck in the chamber. Anybody bring a cleaning rod? No...
While we're toiling over the stuck case, Mrs Chop is burning through a couple boxes of .40 having the best time ever. Good thing I'm shooting 9 mm today otherwise I'd be S-O-L. We don't have anything on hand to deal with the stuck case so that gets packed away. Finally everybody gets squared away and we finally did get down to having fun. I was able to burn up two boxes of 9 and around 250 rds of 5.56. Mrs Chop went through 2 boxes of .40, and a box of 9. No idea what the kids did by this point, I know I gave her 3 mags full at one point and he fired at least that much. Although it clouded up, never did rain.
End of the day, policed up our brass, secured the range, we got home, showered, ate, and collapsed on the couch. A few frustrating moments but we all did have fun. It was a good day
