It is the alloy frame version of the all stainless 4006. Probably not produced in great numbers.

The 4004 is one of the, if not the most, rare pistols produced in the 3rd gen .40 model line. I don't know what the exact manufacturing numbers are but it is low. Just about anything discussed about the 4003 applies to the 4004 only that the 4004 has the carbon slide. Others may come along shortly and provide be able to provide more info.

Not real sure how the 4004 is configured. I bought a 4003 from a policeman that was special ordered for his unit that had an aluminum frame, 3 magazines and no safety installed. The frame-mounted lever only decocked the gun. I have the original blue plastic box the pistol came in.
I bought it last year on a local forum but I think I gave around $400.00 for it then (pre-Sandy Hook) as it is in pristine dondition with the original box and docs with it.
Does it have a carbon-steel slide (Black) or does it have a stainless slide like the 4003?

I believe it is a carbon steel version of the 4006. The 4003 is the alloy framed version. I own a 4003TSW, a 5903TSW, and a 5943TSW. All three have an alloy frame. The above mentioned pistol would be a 4026 if it had a frame mounted decocker and a stainless frame. I have never heard of S & W making an alloy framed frame mounted decocker pistol. However, it wouldn't be the first time I have been proven wrong.

You have found yourself a very rare pistol there. I don't believe the value is much higher then the 4003 to the average guy, but to a S&W semi-auto collector there is a premium in the price. Most people don't even know these exist, so owning one is special in my book. In any case it is the blue version of a 4003, but that description just seems to miss the point of how rare these guns are.
Not to hijack your thread here but here are two pictures you may be interested in. The first one is of a 4004 and 4003, and the second picture is of 4 different pistols in the 40XX series (4040 hard to find but not rare, 4003, 4004 rare, 4006 very nice but almost everyone has one).
For information on the pistol you have and aluminum alloy frame, anodized blue/black, with a carbon steel slide double stack 40 S&W. These were introduced early on around 1990 with the all stainless version 4006 and silver alloy version 4003. They are all nice, sturdy, and reliable pistols. If you have any other questions just ask and I'll see if I can get more specifics.
